Proclamations, Opinions, Awards - Historical - 2/25/2020 CITY OF GLENDALE WHEREAS, throughout the year 2020, the United States will celebrate the 100th anniversary of the 19th Amendment and women’s constitutional right to vote; and WHEREAS, in 1848, brave and courageous suffragists began their organized efforts seeking women’s equality and the right to vote during the first women’s rights convention in Seneca Falls, New York; and WHEREAS, in 1912, Frances Lillian Willard Munds organized efforts leading to the Arizona ballot initiative granting women’s suffrage, which passed by a three-to-one margin in every county in our state; and WHEREAS, in January 1918, the 19th Amendment, sometimes called the “Susan B. Anthony” Amendment, passed the House of Representatives, was approved by the U.S. Senate in June 1919 and sent to the states for ratification; and WHEREAS, women have in the past and continue today to make significant, positive contributions at every level of society: the family, community, county, state, nation and worldwide. NOW, THEREFORE, I, Jerry P. Weiers, Mayor of the City of Glendale, Arizona, on behalf of the City Council, do hereby proclaim, March 2020, in honor of Women’s History Month, as: Centennial Women’s Suffrage Month And urge all citizens to salute the valiant efforts of the Glendale Woman’s Club, whose 119 years of dedication to our community, Arizona and our nation’s celebration of the Women’s Suffrage Centennial.
