Proclamations, Opinions, Awards - Historical - 4/14/2020 CITY OF GLENDALE WHEREAS, library staff and librarians work to meet the changing needs of our communities, including providing resources for everyone and expanding services beyond library walls; and WHEREAS, at its four libraries last year – Velma Teague, Foothills, Heroes and the Main Library - the Glendale Public Library system had nearly 550,000 visitors; circulated almost 1.5 million items, and offered 2,000 free community programs that were attended by over 62,000 customers; and WHEREAS, Glendale libraries enable citizens to transform their lives by offering programs to meet our community’s needs: resumé writing classes for residents in our Main Library’s IDEA small business center, 24/7 access to online tutorial help for students, STEM programming with our ‘Exploration & Discovery Backpacks’ and ‘Level-Up’ Teen Services Grants; and WHEREAS, with the addition of the Heroes Regional Park Library, serves nearly 400,000 Glendale citizens and west valley residents and for future generations; providing early literacy and citizenship classes, access to new and bilingual materials, wi-fi technology and community meeting room and study spaces; and WHEREAS, libraries, librarians, library staff, and their advocates across America are celebrating National Library Week in support of the American Library Association’s initiative Find Your Place at the Library; NOW, THEREFORE, I, Mayor Jerry P. Weiers, Mayor of the City of Glendale, Arizona on behalf of the City Council, do hereby proclaim April 19-25, 2020 be known as: National Library Week I encourage all residents to visit the library online this week, or sign up for a free library card that will provide them access to books, movies, music and more.
