Proclamations, Opinions, Awards - Historical - 4/11/2018 CITY OF GLENDALE WHEREAS, libraries are the heart of our communities; and WHEREAS, librarians and library staff work to meet the changing needs of our communities, including providing resources for everyone and expanding services beyond library walls; and WHEREAS, librarians and library staff are tech-savvy professionals, providing technology training, job search assistance and access to downloadable content like e-books and downloadable media; and WHEREAS, Glendale libraries enable citizens to transform their lives by offering programs to meet our community’s needs: resume-writing classes for residents, 24/7 access to homework and tutorial help for students, retirement planning for older adults starting a second career; and WHEREAS, at its three libraries last year – Velma Teague, Foothills, and Main - the Glendale Public Library system had over 550,000 visitors; circulated nearly 1.6 million items, provided over 100,000 public computer-use sessions, and offered 2,200 free community programs attended by 55,000 customers to encourage literacy and access to life-long learning; and WHEREAS, libraries, librarians, library staff, and their advocates across America are celebrating National Library Week in support of the American Library Association’s Libraries Lead Campaign. NOW, THEREFORE, I, Jerry P. Weiers, Mayor of the City of Glendale, Arizona on behalf of the City Council, do hereby proclaim April 8-14, 2018, as NATIONAL LIBRARY WEEK The 2018 National Library Week celebration marks the 60th anniversary of the first event, sponsored in 1958. I encourage all residents to visit the library this week, to sign up for a free library card, and to take advantage of the wonderful resources available at the Glendale Public Library.
