OF RECOGNITION
WHEREAS, Nell & Guy Hickman flocked to Arizona and started their “egg-sellent”
business in 1944; and
WHEREAS, Bill and Gertie Hickman (Nell & Guy’s son and daughter-in-law) began their
“egg-treprenuer” adventure in the spring of 1957 with the purchase of 500 chicks,
becoming 50/50 partners with Nell; and
WHEREAS, in 1959, Gertie began selling eggs out of her husband Bill’s 1955 Ford coupe
to local cafes and grocery stores after egg production exceeded porch sales; and
WHEREAS, by 1969 the Hickman Egg Ranch grew to 80,000 laying hens on ten acres at
67th and Missouri Avenues; and
WHEREAS, in 1970 Bill and Gertie Hickman began relocating their family of humans and
chickens to 40 acres of land they purchased on 91st and Orangewood Avenues and grew to
125,000 laying hens by 1975; and
WHEREAS, Hickman’s Family Farms now spans across six locations in Arizona,
California and Colorado and is now the second largest egg producer in the western United
States; and
WHEREAS, Hickman’s Family Farms’ eggs are now exported to seven states including
Hawaii; and
WHEREAS, Hickman’s Family Farms proudly strives to be a sustaining, environmentally
friendly industry leader with 100% post-consumer recycled PET plastic egg cartons,
computer monitoring systems, automated transport and packing of eggs and egg cartons,
expanded cage-free barns and innovative waste recycling usage; and
WHEREAS, Hickman’s Family Farms enters its 75th year strongly with their third and
fourth generation Hickman’s dedicated to innovation while carrying on the family legacy.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Jerry P. Weiers, Mayor of the City of Glendale, Arizona, on
behalf of the City Council, do hereby recognize
HICKMAN’S FAMILY FARMS
for steadfastly shaking their tailfeathers and their dedication to producing top quality
eggs and innovation in the industry, I urge all of our residents to join me in
congratulating Hickman’s Family Farms on their 75th Anniversary.
