Proclamations, Opinions, Awards - Historical - 4/9/2019 CITY OF GLENDALE WHEREAS, libraries equal strong communities; and WHEREAS, librarians and library staff work to meet the changing needs of our communities, including providing resources for everyone and expanding services beyond library walls; and WHEREAS, our newest facility, the Heroes Regional Park Library, will serve nearly 400,000 Glendale citizens and west valley residents for generations; providing early literacy classes, access to new and bi-lingual materials, wi-fi technology and community meeting room space; and WHEREAS, Glendale libraries enable citizens to transform their lives by offering programs to meet our community’s needs: resume-writing classes for residents in our Main Library’s new IDEA small business center, 24/7 access to online tutorial help for students, retirement planning and programming with our Creative Aging Grant; and WHEREAS, at its three libraries last year – Velma Teague, Foothills, and Main - the Glendale Public Library system had over 550,000 visitors; circulated nearly 1.5 million items, provided nearly 110,000 public computer-use sessions, and offered 2,200 free community programs attended by 68,000 customers to encourage literacy and access to life-long learning; and WHEREAS, advocates across America are celebrating National Library Week in support of the American Library Association’s Libraries = (equal) Strong Communities. NOW, THEREFORE, I, Jerry P. Weiers, Mayor of the City of Glendale, Arizona on behalf of the City Council, do hereby proclaim April 7-13, 2019, as: NATIONAL LIBRARY WEEK I encourage all residents to visit the library this week, including the opening of our new Heroes branch, located at the corner of 83rd Avenue and Bethany Home Road, to sign up for a free library card.
