Proclamations, Opinions, Awards - Historical - 8/13/2019 CITY OF GLENDALE WHEREAS, National Aviation Week was established in 1939 by President Franklin D. Roosevelt; and WHEREAS, National Aviation Week always occurs during the week of August 19, to coincide with Orville Wright’s birthday; and WHEREAS, aviation pioneers such as Clement Ader, Hugo Junkers, the Wright brothers, Amelia Earhart, Charles Lindbergh and Howard Hughes all contributed to the invention and innovation of modern aviation; and WHEREAS, the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA) the founding predecessor to NASA celebrated its 114th year in March 2019; and WHEREAS, the Glendale Municipal Airport enters its 33rd year of providing its residents and neighbors with an outlet for their love of flying, a home for planes and continues to support the city’s economic development. NOW, THEREFORE, I, Jerry P. Weiers, Mayor of the City of Glendale, Arizona on behalf of the City Council, do hereby proclaim August 19- 25, as: NATIONAL AVIATION WEEK I encourage all residents to learn more about the history and science of aviation.
