Proclamations, Opinions, Awards - Historical - 4/24/2019 CITY OF GLENDALE WHEREAS, Jazz music’s birthplace of the United States is recognized worldwide; and WHEREAS, April 30th is recognized as International Jazz Day due to the efforts of renowned Jazz Musician, Herbie Hancock; and WHEREAS, in 2011, the Smithsonian Institute recognized April as Jazz Appreciation Month, to celebrate the heritage and history of Jazz music; and WHEREAS, Jazz music promotes quality, mutual respect, freedom of expression and reinforces the importance of cultural awareness and diversity; and WHEREAS, Dr. William “Doc” Jones incorporated the non-profit organization, “International Jazz Day, AZ Foundation” in 2015 to promote peace and connect cultures. NOW, THEREFORE, I, Jerry P. Weiers, Mayor of the City of Glendale, Arizona, on behalf of the City Council do hereby proclaim April 27 and 28, 2019 as: International Jazz Weekend in the City of Glendale and I strongly encourage all our citizens to recognize and participate to support this worthy event.
