CITY OF GLENDALE
WHEREAS, fire is an extremely serious public safety concern both locally and
nationally, and the City of Glendale is committed to ensuring the safety and security of
all those living in and visiting our city, and homes are the locations where people are at
greatest risk from fire; and
WHEREAS, according to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), in 2017,
there were a total of 1,319,500 fires in the U.S. and fire departments responded to a fire
every 24 seconds; and
WHEREAS, in 2017, there were 357,000 home fires, that caused 2,630 civilian deaths,
10,600 civilian injuries; and
WHEREAS, according to NFPA, three out of five home fire deaths occurred in homes
that did not have working or had no smoke alarm. And, the risk of dying in a home fire is
cut in half, when the home has a working smoke alarm; and
WHEREAS, Glendale’s first responders and public educator are dedicated to reducing
the occurrence of home fires and home fire injuries through prevention and education;
and
WHEREAS, the National Fire Protection Association’s 2019 Fire Prevention Week
theme, “Not Every Hero Wears a Cape. Plan and Practice your Escape!” is a great
reminder of the importance of having and practicing a home escape plan;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Jerry P. Weiers, Mayor of the City of Glendale, Arizona, on
behalf of the City Council, do hereby proclaim October 2019 as:
FIRE PREVENTION MONTH
and urge all of the people of Glendale to design and practice their home escape plan at
least twice a year, teach children how to escape on their own, sleep with your bedroom
doors closed, if a fire occurs in your home, once you are outside, stay outside, and support
the many public safety activities and efforts provided by the Glendale Fire Department.
