Proclamations, Opinions, Awards - Historical - 6/11/2019
CITY OF GLENDALE
WHEREAS, keeping children and families healthy and safe around water is a priority
of the Glendale Fire Department, the Glendale Parks and Recreation Department, the
city of Glendale, and other prevention institutions in Arizona; and
WHEREAS, in 2018, there were a total of 161 water related incidents in Maricopa
and Pinal Counties resulting in 52 deaths, 18 of which were children; and in Glendale
in 2018, there were three water related incidents which resulted in one child death;
and
WHEREAS, a child, teen or adult drowning can happen to any family regardless of
education, race or socio-economic background; and
WHEREAS, families can take simple steps to protect their children, teens and adult
family members around water to avoid the tragedy and unnecessary loss of life; and
WHEREAS, these simple steps include the A, B, C’s of water safety; A: Adult
supervision; B: Barriers to include fences with self-closing and self-locking gates; and
C: Swimming classes; and
WHEREAS, providing education, raising awareness to the need for adult supervision
and barriers, and offering swimming classes will increase the understanding of
effective ways to prevent drownings.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Jerry P. Weiers, Mayor of the City of Glendale, Arizona, on
behalf of the City Council, do hereby proclaim the month of August 2019 as:
DROWNING IMPACT AWARENESS MONTH
And call upon the citizens of Glendale to join me in recognizing the importance of
protecting your children and families around water at all times.
