Proclamations, Opinions, Awards - Historical - 9/10/2019 CITY OF GLENDALE WHEREAS, the Bureau of Justice Statistics indicates that 1 in 6 homicide victims and nearly half of all female homicide victims nationally are killed by a current or former intimate partner; and WHEREAS, the rate of intimate partner homicides in Arizona is 45 percent higher than the national average; and WHEREAS, after domestic violence lethality assessment protocols have been implemented by the Glendale Police Department, from 2017 through 2018 there have been zero intimate partner homicides in the City of Glendale; and WHEREAS, partnering with Sojourner Center provides Glendale City Court with a co- located Lay Legal Advocate to assist domestic violence victims with legal resources, victim rights explanation and support; and WHEREAS, domestic violence impacts everyone regardless of race, sex, economic background, occupation or religious beliefs; and WHEREAS, each year October provides an opportunity for all of us to recommit ourselves to support the development of healthy, respectful, and nonviolent relationships reducing the occurrence of domestic violence to prevent it’s harmful, long-lasting effects on our community. NOW, THEREFORE, I, Jerry P. Weiers, Mayor of the City of Glendale, Arizona, on behalf of the City Council, do hereby proclaim the month of October 2019 as: DOMESTIC VIOLENCE AWARENESS MONTH and call upon the citizens of Glendale to increase their understanding of domestic violence and be supportive of their family, friends, neighbors, and co-workers who may be a victim of domestic violence.
