Proclamations, Opinions, Awards - Historical - 3/31/2019 CITY OF GLENDALE WHEREAS, César Estrada Chávez was a native Arizonan who is celebrated as one of America’s great Latino American civil rights activists; and WHEREAS, César Chávez devoted his life to improving working conditions for farm workers across the country through the use of nonviolent actions and founded the National Farm Workers Association (NFWA); and WHEREAS, numerous elected bodies and officials have long honored César Chávez’s contributions in support of Latino civil rights and migrant farm workers including his receipt of the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest civilian honor in the United States; and WHEREAS, the César Chávez Breakfast in Glendale Celebrating Diversity brings together the West Valley community to remember and pay respects to the contributions of César Chávez; and WHEREAS; on April 1, 2016, the City of Glendale memorialize the lasting positive contributions of César Chávez with an honorary street, naming a portion of 59th Avenue as Cesar Chavez Boulevard. NOW, THEREFORE, I, Jerry P. Weiers, Mayor of the City of Glendale, Arizona, on behalf of the City Council do hereby proclaim March 31, 2019, as: CÉSAR CHÁVEZ DAY and encourage all Glendale citizens to participate in celebrating and recognizing our City’s triumphs in uniting people of diverse backgrounds in our community.
