CALL TO ORDER
2. ROLL CALL
Present: Diane Kocur, Chair
Gary Johnson, Board Member
Haydee Kukowski, Board Member

4. APPROVAL OF THE MINUTES
a. Board Member

moved, Board Member
Johnson made the second, to approve
the September
13, 2023,
Library Advisory Board
minutes as written.
Motion carried 4 — 0.
5. NEW BUSINESS
a. LIBRARY BOARD CHAIR RECOMMENDATION AND VICE -CHAIR ELECTION
Mr. Beck explained that the Library Advisory Board can elect its own Vice Chair, but must
send a recommendation to the Government Services Committee for final approval of the
Chair.
Board Member Fowler self -nominated for Vice Chair.
Board Member Johnson moved, Board Member Kukowski made the second, to accept the
nomination and approve Board Member Theresa Fowler as Vice Chair of the Library
Advisory Board for a term beginning February 1, 2024, and ending January 31, 2025.
Motion carried 4 — 0.
Board Member Johnson asked if Chair Kocur would be interested in being Chair again.
Chair Kocur said she would, if no others wanted to be Chair. There was no other interest
expressed.
Board Member Johnson moved, Board Member Fowler made the second, to recommend
Board member Diane Kocur as Chair of the Library Advisory Board for a term beginning
February 1, 2024, and ending January 31, 2025.
Motion carried 4 — 0.
b. FY2022-23 LIBRARYACCOMPLISHMENTS
Mr. Beck gave a presentation on the FY2022-23 Library Accomplishments, which included
information on the following:
• Overview of the Glendale Library System
• Accomplishments
o Arizona@Work Job Fairs at the Main and Heroes Libraries
o Library celebrated its 100-year anniversary with the City
o New security camera installations at all branches, 24/7
o Customer Service QR Code survey tool
o Stand-up for Veterans event participation
o Annual LibCon West drew over 600 attendees despite rain
o Main Library organization projects
o Some City Hall staff relocated to Main and Foothills Libraries due to the City Hall
renovation
o Collection Development 'weeding parties'
o LSTA Grant awards (STEAM, Virtual Reality, Storywalks)
o Semi-annual Main Library book sales return (February and August)
o Glendale University presentations
o Phone app development and launch
• Glendale is the first or second library in Arizona to have a workable phone
app
o Building improvements
• Main Library exterior painting
• Parking Lots (Main and Foothills)
• Velma Teague and Heroes enhancements
• Automatic doors (Foothills and Velma Teague)
o Adopt a Street clean-up program
• Staff volunteered to clean-up a designated section for Community Services along
Bethany Home Road
Junior CSI Academy held at Main Library
New, increased operating hours on September 5th
• Increased by 6 hours a week system -wide
Chair Kocur asked if the public's comments in the recent survey for additional programming
nights were addressed. Mr. Beck said due to the increased hours, Thursday nights were
added for additional programming.
Board Member Kukowski reported that she downloaded the library app on her phone. She
asked for statistics on self -checkout via the app versus using the machines and the number
of app downloads. Mr. Beck will follow up.
C. UPCOMING SPECIAL PROGRAMS AND OUTREACH
Mr. Beck shared the following event updates:
• September 14th: Stand -Up for Veterans Event at Arizona Christian University.
Library staff will conduct outreach and answer questions.
• October 28th: Halloween Comic Fest at the Velma Teague Library from 5:00 p.m. to
8:00 p.m. Over 1,000 participants expected.
• October 28th: Foothills Annual Book Sale at 10:00 a.m.
• November 11th: Annual Veterans Day Flag Changing Ceremony at the City's
Veterans Memorial just outside of the Main Library at 9:00 a.m.
• On December 2nd, the Annual LibCon event will be held at the Main Library from
noon to 5:00 p.m.
• January 2024: Annual Songwriters Event. More details to follow.
6. CHIEF LIBRARIAN UPDATE
a. Mr. Beck shared his update. Highlights included the following:
• The next Board meeting will be held at the Foothills Library.
• The City's budget process will be starting soon.
• Staff is reviewing the impact of the increase in hours.
• An opportunity for the Board to consider a demonstration of the Virtual Reality sets
as a future agenda item.
7. BOARD MEMBER COMMENTS AND SUGGESTIONS
Chair Kocur congratulated the Library staff on all of its accomplishments. She said people
were not aware of all that the Library staff does.
8. NEXT MEETING
The next regular meeting of the Library Advisory Board will be held on November 8, 2023,
at 6:00 p.m., in the Hummingbird Room at the Foothills Library, 19055 N. 57th Avenue,
Glendale, Arizona, 85308,
9. ADJOURNMENT
Board Member Johnson moved, Board Member Fowler made the second, to adjourn the
meeting at 6:43 p.m.
Motion carried 4 — 0.
The Library Advisory Board meeting minutes of October 11, 2023, were submitted and approved
this 8 day of November 23.
