GLENDALE, ARIZONA 85302 SEPTEMBER 13, 2023 6:00 P.M. 1. CALL TO ORDER 2. ROLL CALL Present: Diane Kocur, Chair-Cholla District Gary R. Johnson, Board Member -Barrel District Haydee Kukowski, Board Member-Sahuaro District Meegan Tosh, Board Member -Mayoral -Yucca District Theresa Fowler, Board Member -Yucca District Also Present: Michael Beck, Chief Librarian Dawn Ferro, Library Administrator Natalie Menges, Librarian Anne Stapley, Water Conservation Specialist Esther Peneff, Administrative Support Specialist 3. CITIZEN COMMENTS None. 4. APPROVAL OF THE MINUTES a. Library Advisory Board Minutes of August 26, 2023. Board Member Kukowski moved, Board Member Johnson made the second, to approve the August 26, 2023, Library Advisory Board minutes as written. Motion carried 5 — 0. 5. NEW BUSINESS a. INFORMATION: SUMMER READING PROGRAM UPDATE Ms. Menges gave a presentation of the 2023 Summer Reading Program, which included information on the following: • What is Summer Reading o Incentive program where participants earn prizes for tracking time spent reading o Open to all ages o All valley libraries participate o Program runs June 1 st through August 1 st o Maricopa Council sponsors three free programs annually for every library branch in Glendale • Theme: All Together Now • Timeline o Timeline chart with milestones provided • Program Analysis — Graphs and Charts provided o Program Registrations by Age Group o Registration and Completion by Library o Achiever Rate by Age o Library Event Attendance (June and July) • Next Steps o The theme for 2024 is Adventure Begins at Your Library Chair Kocur asked who chose the themes. Ms. Menges said the themes were chosen at the state level. She explained the general timeline of the annual advance planning at the state level. Mr. Beck noted there was also wrap -around programming done in support of the Summer Reading Program. He thanked Ms. Menges and her team for doing a great job. Chair Kocur asked about the prizes for adults. Ms. Menges said the adult prizes included Library Book Sale coupons, Free Drink coupon at Raising Kanes, Arizona State Parks Passes, and Phoenix Mercury Rising tickets. She said some of the prizes came in via partnership with the county. Board Member Kukowski asked if the artist chosen for the program promotional art was from Arizona. Ms. Menges believed so, but will follow up with confirmation. b. INFORMATION: COLLABORATIVE PROGRAMMING AND SERVICE OPPORTUNITIES Ms. Stahley gave a presentation on Collaborative Programming and Service Opportunities with Water Conservation, which included detailed information on the following: • Water Conservation Program History • Conservation and Sustainable Living Program Today o Maintain Best Management Practices • Public Awareness o Average Daily Water Usage information • Adult Education — Green -Living Class Series • Adult Education — Free Conservation Kits at the Glendale Libraries • Water Awareness Day • Adult Education — Glendale Seed Library • Youth Education at the Glendale Libraries • Glendale Xeriscape Demonstration Garden Chair Kocur asked if there were plans for other xeriscape gardens, for example, possibly at Heroes Regional Park Library. Ms. Stahley said when Heroes was planned, her department was contacted for ideas on landscaping, but not a xeriscape garden. Mr. Beck thanked Ms. Stahley for being a great partner and said that the Seed Library was one of the top five circulations in the library. 6. CHIEF LIBRARIAN UPDATE a. Mr. Beck updated the Board members on current Library activities, operations, and projects. Highlights included the following: • On October 29th and 30th, the Semi -Annual Book Sale will be held at the Foothills Library. • On December 2nd, the Annual LibCon event will be held at the Main Library. It is a pop culture and graphic novel event and is being relocated from the Velma Teague Library due to the Downtown Reconstruction Project. There will be food trucks, wrap around programs, arts and crafts for kids, and between twenty-five and thirty cosplayers. It is an all ages, family event. • At the October Board meeting, the Board will have to elect a Vice Chair and vote on a recommendation for Chair to Council. 7. BOARD MEMBER COMMENTS AND SUGGESTIONS None. 8. NEXT MEETING The next regular meeting of the Library Advisory Board will be held on Wednesday, October 11, 2023, at 6:00 p.m., in the Board Room of the Main Library located at 5959 W. Brown St., Glendale, Arizona, 85302. 9. ADJOURNMENT Board Member Tosh moved, Board Member Fowler made the second, to adjourn the meeting at 6:48 p.m. Motion carried 5 — 0.
