CALL TO ORDER

None.
APPROVAL OF THE MINUTES
a. Board member Eva Ndavu moved, Board Member Gary R. Johnson made the second to
approve the April 12, 2023, Library Advisory Board minutes as written. Motion Carried 4-
0.
NEW BUSINESS
a. INFORMATION: JUNIOR CSI ACADEMY PROGRAM
Ms. Melton gave a brief history of the Junior CSI Program at the library. She announced
this year's event will be held on May 20, 2023 at the Glendale Main Library and estimated
attendance of 250 to 300 people.
Mr. Martinez provided information on the marketing and promotion of the Junior CSI
Academy.
Sgt. Daukas provided details on the program, including information on the following:
Origins of the program
Stations for participation at the event:
o Blood & DNAAnalysis
o Conversation with a Glendale Police Officer
o Crime Scene Investigation
o Fingerprinting
o K-9
o SWAT Truck
The program should last about 2 hours.
Sgt. Daukas would like to see the program become a model in the valley for other
libraries. He said it was low cost and high value. He complimented Mr. Beck and staff on
their involvement and support of the program.
Mr. Beck thanked Sgt. Daukus for his passion for the program, noted it was a true
collaboration between City departments, and said it was a great partnership.
b. ACTION: FY2023-24 LIBRARYADVISORY BOARD MEETING SCHEDULE
Mr. Beck presented the draft FY2023-24 Library Advisory Board meeting schedule for
Board review.
Board Member T. Ndavu announced he had to resign from the Board as he was moving
out of the City limits. Board Member E. Ndavu announced she was resigning as well.
Discussion was held regarding the date of the retreat.
Board Member T. Ndavu moved, Board Member Johnson made the second, to approve
the FY2023-24 Library Advisory Board Meeting Schedule, with the date of the retreat on
Saturday, August 26, 2023, and confirmation the Board will have a meeting on February
14, 2024.
Motion carried 4 — 0.
7. CHIEF LIBRARIAN UPDATE
a. Mr. Beck updated the Board members on current Library activities, operations, and
projects. Highlights included the following:
• The Foothills Library held its semi-annual book sale, which was the most successful
ever.
• The theme of this summer's reading program is'All Together Now' and there will be
prizes for milestones.
• The automated doors were recently replaced at the Foothills Library and the Velma
Teague Library.
• The book ranges are being adjusted and moved at the Velma Teague Library for better
lines of sight.
• Weeding parties will be held at the libraries to `weed' out the collection.
• The Free Comic Book Day was held at the Velma Teague Library last Saturday. There
were over twenty-seven vendors and Star Wars characters, at the successful event.
• The smart phone app for the library is in the final developmental stages. It is anticipated
the beta app will be ready over the summer for review and testing.
Board Member T. Ndavu asked if people could use Libby or Overdrive through the smart
phone app. Mr. Beck did not have the information at hand and will follow up on the
question.
8. BOARD MEMBER COMMENTS AND SUGGESTIONS
Board Member Kocur requested a copy of the Board's goals for review prior to the
retreat.
Board Member T. Ndavu said this was his last meeting as he was moving out of the City
limits. He expressed his sincere gratitude and complimented Mr. Beck and his great
presentations. He thanked the other Board members for their service. He said it has been
a great experience, and he regretted that he had to step down.
Board Member E. Ndavu thanked Councilmember Ian Hugh for recommending her and
Mayor Weiers for confirming her to the post. She thanked all of the other members for
their time and faithful participation. She said Mr. Beck made participation a very easy job,
she never considered it a task to attend a meeting, and she has enjoyed the Board and
the other members.
Mr. Beck thanked Board Member T. Ndavu and Board Member E. Ndavu for their service,
attendance, and participation.
9. NEXT MEETING
The next regular meeting of the Library Advisory Board will be the Board Retreat held on
Saturday, August 26, 2023, at 9:00 a.m., in the Board Room of the Main Library, located
at 5959 W. Brown St., Glendale, Arizona, 85302.
10. ADJOURNMENT
Board Member Tim Ndavu moved, Board Member Eva Ndavu made the second, to
adjourn the meeting at 6:28 p.m.
Motion carried 4 - 0.
The Library Advisory Board meeting minutes of May 10, 2023, were submitted and approved
this 26th day of August 2023.
