CALL TO ORDER 2. PUBLIC COMMENTS No comments were received. 4. APPROVAL OF THE MINUTES a.Arts Commission Minutes of Thursday, April 27, 2023. The deadline to apply for the FY2023-24 Performing Arts Grants is June 16, 2023. The Sierra Verde Park Well Site Art Project is in the fabrication stage. Different types of lighting are being explored as well. The consultants for the Arts Master Plan will be meeting with staff for an in-person Art Visit and an Art Tour. The visit will include interviews with internal staff and Councilmembers. b.ACTION: Approval of Recommended Funding for Ballet Under the Stars event Ms. Ingro reported that Ballet Arizona’s Ballet Under the Stars Event will be held Saturday, September 23, 2023.Last year, Ballet Arizona’s grant request was for $10,000. This year ’s request is for $15,000. This year, the event was held in February 2023. Next year, the event will be held Saturday, March 9, 2024. Staff is looking to do a contract again with SAACA, the Southern Arizona Arts & Cultural Alliance, for the event. The event was highly successfully this year. The grant request is for $49,000. Commissioner Hailey noted the upcoming construction in downtown Glendale and asked if this would impact the event. Ms. Ingro said the event was held in Murphy Park this year. She explained in 2024, the event will be held in the downtown Civic Center space and also, road closures would be done to expand the festival into other areas, such as near the downtown merchants. Motioned by Commissioner Anne Marie Chaney, seconded by Commissioner James Smith AYE:Vice Chair Nancy Lenox Commissioner Jose Aguinaga Commissioner Jean Hailey Commissioner Anne Marie Chaney Commissioner James Smith Other:Chair Lorraine Zomok (ABSENT) Commissioner Derrell Barber (ABSENT) Passed e.ACTION: Approval of deaccessioning recommended artwork from municipal portable art collection Ms. Ingro displayed a spreadsheet detailing art pieces that were either in City Hall, in the Public Courts building, or in the storage unit.She explained the reasoning for the recommended deaccessions. She noted that some artwork was damaged and some artwork will be deaccessioned in order to make room for new artwork after the City Hall and Public Courts building are renovated. Chair Lenox asked how the art could get damaged if it was stored properly in the storage unit. Ms. Ingro explained reasons for how this damage can occur naturally and over time. Commissioner Hailey asked if a deaccessioned piece could be returned to the original artist. Ms. Ingro explained most of the proposed deaccessioned pieces were made in the 1970’s or 1980’s. She tried to look up the artists for return of the pieces, but was unsuccessful. She noted this was another reason the policy required update. Commissioner Chaney asked what would be done with the deaccessioned pieces.Ms. Ingro said the piece could be assessed by a local auction house, with a possibility to find a new home. The project goal is to commemorate the history of Thunderbird Field. Twenty-two artists applied for the project and the selection panel chose two finalists: Ms. Kristine Kollasch and Mr. Jeff Zischke. The two finalists received an honorarium for research to prepare a design. Community feedback of the designs was conducted via survey. The artists were provided with the feedback and revised their designs based on the feedback. The panel reconvened to select the final artist and design. Ms. Kristine Kollasch was chosen as the selected artist by the panel. Ms. Ingro displayed the selected art concept and relayed details of the design. Mr. Sabillon will send an email to obtain Commissioner availability and determine the date for the August 2023 meeting. STAFF REPORTS Ms. Ingro announced the following: The terrazzo flooring at the Heroes Library has gone under repair and cleaning and buffing has been done. The floor looks beautiful. All are encouraged to visit the library. The O’Neil Park Community Center has been undergoing renovations. The Center housed a bronze bear statue, called Made in the Shade. During the renovation, the bear was moved into storage, and cleaning maintenance was conducted on the bear. The bear statue is back at the O’Neil Park Community Center and it also has a new plaque. Mr. Sabillon said there will be recruitment for Ms. Vahabzadeh’s and Ms. Ingro’s positions. 7. COMMISSION COMMENTS Vice Chair Lenox wished Ms. Ingro well in her new position. 8. NEXT MEETING The next regular meeting of the Glendale Arts Commission will be held on August 3, 2023 or August 10, 2023 at 6:00 p.m., via Zoom. 9.
