1. CALL TO ORDER
Vice Chair Zomok called the meeting to order at 6:06 p.m.
2. ROLL CALL

No comments were received.
4. APPROVAL OF THE MINUTES
a. Arts Commission Minutes of December 15, 2022.

5. NEW BUSINESS
a. Information: Introductions
Ms. Vahabzadeh introduced new Commissioners Smith and Chaney. All commissioners and
staff shared a brief background.
b. Information: Update on Current Projects
Ms. Ingro gave an update on the following:
• Downtown Arts & Culture Fest: The event will be held on February 4, 2023 at Murphy
Park and will feature art, entertainment, music, and food. Volunteer opportunities are
available to represent the Arts Commission at a tented booth.
•Arts and Culture Calendar: Ms. Ingro announced she has been working on the new Arts
and Culture calendar of events on the City's website.
Ms. Vahabzadeh provided information on the following:
• Downtown Arts & Culture Fest: In order to highlight downtown businesses, there will be
a passport program to encourage festival attendees to visit local businesses. She
thanked the Commission for approving funding for the event.
•The Plein Air Competition: On Saturday March 4th, the competition will be held at
Sahuaro Ranch Park. The competition is held in conjunction with the Folk and Heritage
Festival.
Ms. Vahabzadeh provided information on the following CIP Projects:
•Sierra Verde Park Well Site: Chair Barber and Commissioner Riley participated on the
artist selection panel. The selected artist is John Randall Nelson, who has been working
with the teams as well and will be providing two designs. Once the designs are ready,
Councilmember Tolmachoff and the residents of the neighboring HOA will review and
provide feedback. The artist will have approximately two weeks to incorporate the
feedback into his designs and then the designs will come to the selection panel for final
choices. The art will be installed on the walls and there may be a freestanding structure
as well.
•Thunderbird Field Art Project: This is a project in Councilmember Malnar's district which
will commemorate the Thunderbird Field site and its historical significance. The
application period was open until January 20, 2023 for Arizona artists only. An artist
selection panel will be chosen and Commissioners were welcomed to volunteer to
participate.
Commissioner Chaney and Commissioner Smith volunteered to serve on the artist selection
panel for the Thunderbird Field Art Project. Vice Chair Zomok volunteered to be an alternate.
c. Information: Tour of Interactive Public Art Map
Ms. Ingro gave an interactive tour of the new Arts and Culture calendar of events on the City's
website. Commissioner Smith suggested a contest to encourage the public to visit all of the
pieces, whereby they may win a prize for doing so. Ms. Ingro will explore the suggestion. Vice
Chair Zomok complimented Ms. Ingro on the great work. Ms. Vahabzadeh praised Ms. Ingro
and a member of the City's GIS team, who worked together to complete the project quickly.
6. COMMISSION COMMENTS
Vice Chair Zomok noted that Commissioner Riley would be missed from the Commission, as
this was her last meeting.
7. NEXT MEETING
The next regular meeting of the Glendale Arts Commission will be held on February 23, 2023
at 6:00 p.m., in 2A Meeting Room, on the second floor of City Hall, 5850 W. Glendale
Ave., Glendale, Arizona, 85301.
8. ADJOURNMENT
Vice Chair Zomok adjourned the meeting at 6:38 p.m.

The meeting was called to order at 5:58 p.m. by Vice Chair Nancy Lenox.

5. NEW BUSINESS
a. Information: Update on Current Projects
Mojgan Vahabzadeh, Arts & Culture Program Manager, presented information about the
upcoming Arts & Culture master planning process. Staff informed the Commission about The
Cultural Planning Group, the consulting firm that was competitively selected by a panel to help
facilitate and lead the planning process along with Arts & Culture staff. Arts Commissioners
will definitely be involved in the process that will take approximately one year to be completed.
Ms. Vahabzadeh also invited the Commission to attend the Plein Air Painting Festival on
March 4, 2023.
Taylor Ingro, Arts & Culture Coordinator, presented photos and information about the February
4, 2023 Downtown Glendale Arts & Culture Fest, which was successfully held at Murphy Park
the weekend before the Super Bowl. The event was highly-attended and appreciated by the
festival attendees as well as the local merchants in the downtown area. Staff thanked
Commissioner Lenox and Commissioner Smith for volunteering their time during the festival to
staff the information deskl. Ms. Ingro updated the Commission on the upcoming Thunderbird
Field public art project. Ms. Vahabzadeh presented an update about the current Sierra Verde
Park public art project.
6. COMMISSION COMMENTS
Commissioner Smith gave a brief summary regarding the recently held Vision and Sound
series of artist talks, which were funded by the Arts Commission and presented at the
Glendale Main Library.
7. NEXT MEETING
The next meeting of the Glendale Arts Commission will be held on Thursday, March 23, 2023
at 6 p.m. via Zoom.
8. ADJOURNMENT
Vice Chair Lenox adjourned the meeting at 6:48 p.m.
