5. NEW BUSINESS
a. FOOTHILLS 3-D PRINTER DEMONSTRATION (Informational)
Chief Librarian Beck introduced Erin Garred, Librarian. Mrs. Garred, Adult and Teen
Services Librarian stated that she has been at the Foothills Library for eight and a half
years, focusing mainly on technology. Everything she has learned was from the internet,
practice and trial and error. The printer that was shown has a dual extruder (two colors of
filament). The filaments come in a variety of colors and the extruders build the project layer
by layer. A teen program will be starting in January, and we have some of the 3D items on
display to keep interest going. Mrs. Garred passed out mini 3D print-outs for each board
member. Eventually, Mrs. Garred will try using rubber material instead of the plastic
filament. This type of project will help teens with an educational experience that can help
them in the future. They also get to keep their project that was created.
Board Member Eva Ndavu asked about the longevity of the machine, maintenance and
materials used. Mrs. Garred stated that filaments will need to be replaced as the supply is
used. Each spool costs about $25. The City of Mesa charges five cents per gram, and we
charge ten cents per gram. The longevity is approximately five years or longer but as
technology changes, it should be replaced. The maintenance for the machine is minimal;
keep plates level and extruders might wear out or become damaged. It is very easy to
work on, and the response team based out of China has been wonderful.
Board Member Eva Ndavu asked how long it takes to create a piece. Mrs. Garred stated
that it depends on the project and can vary from thirty minutes to approximately four hours.
The average time is one -hour, per person.
Board Member Kocur asked how the kids sign up for the program. Mrs. Garred stated that
the machine can be programmed to run on its own. There is a free public domain
(Thingiverse) to find a project that someone wants to print, save it on a USB drive, then it
will get printed out by library staff. Board Member Kocur asked if errors happen in the
coding or in its creation. Mrs. Garred stated that it can happen at any point of the creation.
If an online file is not a complete file or from a bad site, it will not print correctly. Humidity
and temperature make a difference as well.
Vice -Chair Timothy Ndavu asked if the file will still be available if the machine is turned off.
Mrs. Garred stated that the project can be stopped mid -completion and can continue where
it left off.
Board Member Eva Ndavu asked if staff will be trained. Mrs. Garred stated yes, staff will
be trained, and she plans on creating a manual as well.
Vice -Chair Timothy Ndavu stated that 3D printing is a great technology tool. The first 3D-
house was printed recently in Tempe, in additional to potential 3D-printed prosthetics and
organs. Mrs. Ferro added there is also 3D-printed clothing and food. Mrs. Garred said
there is also a 3D-chocolate printer and stated our hope is to help our community learn this
technology.
Chair Johnson asked if there were any other questions. No other questions.
Chief Librarian Beck thanked Mrs. Garred. The library ideally would like to have a 3D
printer for each branch which has a wealth of programming possibilities.
