1. Call to Order
Chairperson Koory called the meeting to order at 6:00 p.m.
2. Roll Call
Board Members in Attendance: Chairperson Koory, Vice Chair Collett, and Board members Kocur,
Fernandes, Johnson, Aborne, and Ndavu were present. Board members Lund and Alberts were absent.
Staff in Attendance: Michael Beck, Chief Librarian
3. Citizen Comments
None.
4. Approval of Minutes – October 13, 2017
Vice Chair Collett moved, Board Member Johnson made the second, to approve the October 11,
2017 Library Advisory Board minutes as written. Motion carried 7 – 0.
5. New Business
Chair Koory announced that, because two Board members had to leave the meeting early, the In-
Memoriam Service Letter agenda item will be moved to before the Heroes Regional Park Library Update.
No opposition was voiced.
a. In-Memoriam Service Letter
Mr. Beck distributed the final letter from the Library Advisory Board in memoriam of Mrs. Shelley E.
Mosley’s recent passing and outstanding service to the Glendale Public Library and community. Mr.
Beck provided two originals for signatures: one for Ms. Mosley’s family and one to be displayed at the
Velma Teague Library. Mr. Beck provided a brief background of Ms. Mosley and stated that this was the
Board’s way to honor Ms. Mosley and her service. All Board members present signed the letters. Mr.
Beck will obtain signatures from Board members Alberts and Lund.
b. Heroes Regional Park Library Update
Mr. Beck provided an update on the status of the plans for the Heroes Regional Park Branch Library,
which included the following:
• A graphic of the building exterior with a Gantt timeline for the project.
• The architect is working on the construction documents, which will then be sent to Planning &
Building Safety for review and sign-off, which includes the police, fire, planning, and safety
departments.
• Construction is expected to begin mid-to-end of April 2018, with 40 weeks anticipated for the
build.
• Building occupancy is anticipated for the end of February or March 2019.
• The project timeline was presented to the public at the Yucca District meeting.

• Ms. Mojgan Vahabzadeh, Arts and Cultural Program Manager, is working on the documents for
the Arts Panel.
• Mr. Beck is working on the grant for Phase II of the exterior youth patio which will have a
concrete pad and colored panel. Board Member Aborne inquired if the panel would be resistant
to graffiti and Mr. Beck stated that it should be and will confirm.
• Furniture options are being reviewed and discussions with the book vendor are moving forward.
• The timeframe is conservative and it is hoped the library can be completed earlier.
• $600,000 annually is earmarked for operating expenses.
Chair Koory inquired if a Head Librarian had been chosen. Mr. Beck replied in the negative and
explained that the Administrative Librarian will be hired first who will then help select the staff.
Board Member Kocur inquired about the bilingual demographic of the district. Mr. Beck replied that,
based on census data, the demographic is approximately 48% bilingual and there will be offerings in
Spanish.
c. 2017 Library Accomplishments Overview
Mr. Beck gave an overview of the Library Accomplishments for 2017, which included the following
highlights:
• Staffing
o Current employees, long-term anniversaries, and employees leaving the department were
presented or recognized.
• Facilities
o Heroes Park Branch Regional Library – Previously discussed
o Upgrades: Velma Teague’s Exterior Painted, New Foothills Meeting Room and Lobby
Carpeting, Main Library Pigeon Control improvements
o Arts Incubator concept researched
o Spring City Clean Up – On site storage clean-up/City auction
o I.D.E.A. Center: Glass enclosure project is in design-phase with architect, $28,000 LSTA
grant was received for the project, and many thanks to Mr. Michael Schor for his hard
work.
o Directional Signs – Additional exterior street signage and replacement of old, faded signs
was completed.
• Special Events
o Performing Arts Partnerships
o Friends of the Library – Kindle Giveaway for Library Card Sign-Up Month, Barnes and
Noble Book Sales, and more.
o Glendale University – Information and a tour of the Main Library were given as part of the
program.
o LIBCON West – Youth/Teen/Adult event to be held on December 9, 2017
o Centerline Arts and Cultural Initiative – Entertainment in Murphy Park/Velma Teague
Library
o Plein Air Painting Competition at the Chocolate Affaire – Artists paint outside in
downtown Glendale and Council participated in a juried competition.
o Summer Teen Art Camp
o Goodwill Job Fairs
o Veteran’s Day Event – Flag changing ceremony/event to be held on Saturday, November
11th at 9:00 a.m., Mayor and Council members will be in attendance, and a military fly over
will be done.

o Express Yourself Check Presentation – LSTA grant presentation
o 17 New Programming Partnerships Formed
• Collection
o DVD Limit Increase – Changed from 10 to 15 DVDs
o Overdrive Advantage – A partnership with the Greater Phoenix Digital Library to offer
more titles, just for Glendale cardholders.
o Increased Hoopla Allocation
o Eliminated Universal Class and Zinio – Only a handful of patrons used this service,
therefore the service was canceled and funds re-allocated to provide Overdrive Advantage
and Hoopla.
o New Sculpture at the Main Library – Valued at $18,000 and donated by a Glendale
resident.

o New Book Vendor – Brodart, which provides better pricing and better services.
o Weeding for Marcive – Cleans up catalog record
o Spring and Fall Foothills Branch Library book sales – Raised $3,000 this past fall
• Outreach Events
o Heroes Regional Park Branch Library Public Outreach Meetings
[Board Member Kocur excused herself from the meeting.]
o Events at Murphy Park – Chocolate Affair, Glendale Glitters
o Council District Meetings
o City-Sponsored Events – G.A.I.N. Event, C.A.P. Annual Resource Fair
o Outreach Purchases – New Laptops, shade tents/canopies purchased
• Customer Service
o Walmart SRP Grant awarded
o Net Promoter Score – In 2017, is 75 and in 2016 was 69. Over 50 is excellent.
o Hope for Hunger Food Drive – Participated in the drive
o Public Vending Machines – Added at the lobby of the Main Library & Velma Teague
o Furniture Upgrades – New Main Library Lobby Furniture, New Computer Chairs
o LSTA Grants – Storywalk and I.D.E.A. Center awarded
o Peacock Cards – Very successful for Library Card Sign-Up Month
o Heat Relief Stations – As a public facility, water is provided upon request
• Technology
o New Printers
o Wi-Fi Stats
o $250,000 in Technology Upgrades completed
o Nextdoor – Postings/announcements on new social media platform
o New Phones at Velma Teague Library
o Library Intranet Page created
Board Member Ndavu inquired as to why Universal Class did not succeed at the library. Mr. Beck
replied that some offerings catch on with patrons and some do not, even if they are good products.
6. Chief Librarian Update
Mr. Beck updated the Board members on current Library activities, operations, and projects. Highlights
included the following:
• AZLA Conference
o Pictures were displayed.
o Mrs. Shelley E. Mosley was honored for her service.

o Mr. and Mrs. Kessler won Volunteers of the Year Award. They have logged over 10,000
hours during their many years with the library.
• Main Library - 30th Birthday
o Announcement was made on social media and City of Glendale website.
• LIBCON West
o Plans are moving forward for this program which has been expanded this year due to last
year’s success.
• December Library Advisory Board Meeting
o At the Velma Teague Library
• New Automated Agenda and Minutes System
o Progress continues on getting the minutes posted and all Board member emails into the
system.
7. Board Member Comments and Suggestions
Chair Koory thanked Mr. Beck for always providing very interesting topics for the Board meetings.
Chair Koory reminded all present that the next Board meeting will be held at the Velma Teague Library.
Board Member Aborne noted that the library will be closed that evening. Mr. Beck agreed and stated
that the doors will be opened for meeting access.
8. Next Meeting
The next regular meeting of the Library Advisory Board will be held on December 13, 2017 at 6:00 p.m.
in the Story Room of the Velma Teague Library, located at 7010 N 58th Avenue, Glendale, Arizona,
85302.
9. Adjournment
The meeting was adjourned by consensus at 6:47 p.m.
