Chair Riley called the meeting to order at 6:00 p.m.

a. Phoenix Theatre Company
Members of the Phoenix Theatre Company were in attendance to provide information on their Partners That Heal program.
Mr. Castaneda shared the following:
• Mission Statement
o Partners that Heal uses improvisation as an antidote to fear, discomfort, and trauma in hospitals, shelters, and other
health care institutions.
Vision
o A world where intervention techniques are offered routinely as an extension to conventional treatment protocols for
patients experiencing trauma, uncertainty, and emotional distress.
What We Do
o Send specially training actors into hospitals
o A brief video on the program was played.
Mr. Yamotahari shared the following:
Who Are The Partners That Heal?
o Founded in 2009
0 6 actors training in theatre and improvisation acting
o Over 250 arts -based interventions
o Over 55,000 patients impacted
COVID-19 Impact
o All digital services since the pandemic and quarantine
0 23% increase in patients served during pandemic
o Increase in demand for service hours and service locations
o Increased capacity to serve additional patients per visit

Members of the group conducted an interactive, improvisational activity with the Commission to demonstrate the interaction with
patients.
b. Phoenbc Conservatory of Music
Ms. Nixon gave a presentation on the Phoenix Conservatory of Music (PCM), with information on the following:
• PCM unleashes the power of music in every individual we serve by providing high quality music education experiences that
are available and accessible.
• Vision
o Be a leading providing in afterschool music education (with a focus in popular and commercial music) in the greater
Phoenix area
o Positively impact students every year in programs that support excellence in student success
o Provide access and opportunities for music development experiences that will help make students college and career
ready
o Be a resource provider and support school music programs in the greater Phoenix area
o Be a national leader in creative youth development
• Statistics on the following programs were shared
o School Programs
o Group Classes
o Private Lessons
o College Prep Program
• Who are our students? Demographics were displayed. 73% are low -to -moderate income
• Detailed information on Afterschool Programs was displayed, including program statistics.
• Glendale High School Music Program
0 50 hours of instructional direction and coaching for the music students at Glendale High School from January to May
2021.
o Combined concert with students from Glendale High School and Phoenix Conservatory of Music's College Prep
Program in a concert or via online live stream.
o PCM will provide program facilitation for school music program support with Glendale High School. Glendale High
School students are 91 % diverse, with 74% being LatinX and 75% are receiving free or reduced lunch.
o Glendale High School has an above average graduation rate (90% compared to 78% statewide) with higher than
average math scores, but only 37% at a proficient level in reading/language arts.
o According to Americans for the Arts, students with high levels of arts involvement are less likely to drop out of school (by
18%) and the arts is linked to higher academic performances.
o PCM invites students to participate in other programs provided by PCM's projects, including student concerts,
workshops, and family interactive programs in the downtown Glendale community. Approximately 300 students served
through the project.
• College Prep Program: ensemble, theory, enrichment, performance
Ms. Nixon played a video, which was a sample showcase of some students playing their original music. Ms. Nixon played a video
of a student ensemble playing a song together virtually, however each in their own locations. Ms. Nixon stated that when PCM is
working with a school, a prescribed program is not use, but rather the program is built on the needs of the school.
c. Arts Commission Chair and Vice Chair Recommendations for 2021
Ms. Mojgan announced that, as per directive by the Government Services Committee, the Commission needs to make a
recommendation for Chair and Vice Chair for 2021.
Action: To recommend Ms. Nicole Riley as Arts Commission Chair and Ms. Derrell Barber as Arts Commission Vice Chair for 2021

d. Vote to Vacate the November 2020 Meeting of the Commission and to Change the Date of the December 2020 Regular Meeting
Due to the timeline of the upcoming meetings during the holidays, the commissioners discussed vacating those meetings.
Action: To vacate the November 2020 and December 2020 Commission meetings

6. STAFF UPDATES
There were no additional updates.
7. COMMISSION COMMENTS
Commissioner Zomok announced that the What's Happening Art Movement (WHAM) is holding a fundraiser event at Top Golf on
November 15, 2020. A flyer will be sent to the Commissioners.
Commissioners discussed the need to produce a brochure or postcard that can help promote the municipal art collection and
events. Staff took note to follow up on the suggestions in the near future.
8. NEXT MEETING
The next regular meeting date of the Glendale Arts Commission is to be determined and will be held via Zoom.
