Present: Nicole Riley, Chair Derrell Barber, Vice Chair Jose Aguinaga, Commissioner Chris Kennedy, Commissioner Lorraine Zomok, Commissioner 5850 West Glendale Avenue Glendale, AZ 85301 Glendale Public Library 5959 W Brown St Glendale, AZ 85302 Also Present: Mojgan Vahabzadeh, Arts & Culture Program Manager Alexandra Papazian, Ballet Arizona Rachel Stern, Ballet Arizona PUBLIC COMMENTS There were no public comments submitted. APPROVAL OF THE MINUTES a. NEW BUSINESS a. INFORMATION: Ballet Arizona - Featuring a Current Performing Arts Partnership Program Grantee Organization Ms. Vahabzadeh introduced Ms. Stern and Ms. Papazian, who were present to share information on their partnership with Glendale, success of their program, and their program pivots during the pandemic. Ms. Papazian provided information on the various offerings of Ballet Arizona, the history with the City of Glendale, and their Class Act Program for students. Ms. Papazian explained a new offering for the students, called Dance AZ. She stated after weeks of lessons, the students would put on a show at their school. She stated Ballet Arizona would like to expand this program in the future, so that the show could be held at the Ballet Arizona Black Box Stage, which would give the students a complete artistic experience. Ms. Papazian explained at the Black Box Stage, the students would be able to experience backstage, front of house, the costume shop, and set -building, in addition to performing with professionals. She stated that Ballet Arizona would like to work with a transportation partner, such as Act One, to transport the kids to Ballet Arizona for the performance. Ms. Papazian clarified the proposed change in the program was being considered for FY2022-23, as it was too soon to implement for this coming fiscal year. b. INFORMATION: "What Does Music Mean to You?" Painted Guitars Art Project and Live! @ Murphy Park Ms. Vahabzadeh gave an update on the Painted Guitars Art Project in Murphy Park, which included the following information: • The event will be held every Thursday through Sunday during May, from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at Murphy Park • The list of bands performing each night was displayed. • Photos of the painted guitars were shown as well as downtown business owners who were participating • The event is free to the public and the kick-off is Thursday, May 6th C. ACTION: FY 2021-22 Performing Arts Partnership Grant Program Ms. Vahabzadeh facilitated a discussion on the guidelines for the FY 2021-22 Performing Arts Partnership Program, which included the following highlights: • Application process will be opened online in late May • The application period will be open for 1.5 months to 2 months and then the Commissioners will review the applications in August • The grants are for $4,000 each and for performing arts projects throughout Glendale • One limitation of the current guidelines is that the projects have to take place within Glendale city limits. The purpose of this agenda item is for the Commissioners to consider modifying the guideline so that students could be transported to recognized and prominent cultural venues outside of Glendale Action: To approve expanding the guidelines of the FY 2021-22 Performing Arts Partnership Program to include opportunities for project proposals that may include transporting student participants to recognized and prominent cultural venues outside of Glendale City limits Motioned by Commissioner Chris Kennedy, seconded by Vice Chair Derrell Barber AYE: Chair Nicole Riley Vice Chair Derrell Barber Commissioner Jose Aguinaga Commissioner Chris Kennedy Commissioner Lorraine Zomok Passed 6. STAFF UPDATES Ms. Vahabzadeh's report included the following: • Encouragement to attend Live @ Murphy Park during May • "The Princely Beast", a sculpture outside the City Court facility is in need of repair. Half of the antlers have come off, it is in need of painting, and it will undergo renovations. • The ceramic art tile concrete centennial ball in front of the Velma Teague Library has been moved a few feet. It weighs approximately 1,500 pounds and must be secured back in its place. It has not been damaged. 7. COMMISSION COMMENTS Chair Riley stated she is planning to attend some of the upcoming music events. 8. NEXT MEETING The next Arts Commission meeting will be held via Zoom on Thursday, May 27, 2021 at 6:00 p.m. 9.
