3. CITIZEN COMMENTS
Councilmember Turner thanked the Commissioners for serving on the Commission,
announced that he represents the Barrel District on City Council, and welcomed all to the
Barrel district. He stated that he is also President of the Glendale Arts Council and shared the
history of the Juried Arts Show. Councilmember Turner relayed that the Glendale Arts Council
retains 25% commission from the art sales at the Show, which are used to fund GCC art
student scholarships, grants to school teachers for the purchase of art supplies, grants to
agencies for arts supplies for at -risk students, art programs for children, funding YMCA
programs, and more. Councilmember Turner again thanked the Commissioners and excused
himself from the meeting.
4. APPROVAL OF THE MINUTES
a. Action: To approve the Arts Commission Minutes of December 5, 2019 as written.

5. NEW BUSINESS
a. ACTION: FY 2020-21 Arts Projects Plan
At the December 5, 2019 meeting, staff engaged the Arts Commission in a discussion about
projects, in order to develop and approve the FY 2020-21 Annual Arts Projects Plan at the
January 9, 2020 meeting. The general budget plan includes:
Community Activity - $176,000:
IN FLUX Valley -wide Initiative - Temporary Art Installation - $5,000
Juried Fine Arts Show - Annual Art Purchase - $2,000
FY 2020-21 Performing Arts Partnership Program Grants - $44,000
Centerline District Arts & Cultural Initiative Grants - $50,000
Community Arts Activities - $20,000
Community Arts Activities (supplemental budget request pending Council approval)
$55,000
Upon further staff and Commission disucssions and consideration, Chair Cole asked for a
motion.
Action: To approve the FY2020-21 Arts Projects Plan as proposed

b. Action: Downtown Bench Project Take a Seat, Glendale!
Ms. Weldon stated that this agenda item is the opportunity for the Commission to review and
approve the 20 design proposals as recommended by the selection panel on December 9,
2019. The project artists are:

Action: To approve recommendations of Downtown Bench Project Selection Panel on the
twenty bench designs by twelve artists: Oliverio Balcells, Clarith Denson, Michael Denson,
Debra Goley, Ruben Hernandez, Jessi Kerr, Christy Moelle, David Morgan, Lydia Quinones,
Summer Schaudt, Monica Pineda-Ucello, and Mary Wolke.

C. ACTION: The Chocolate Experience Temporary Art Project
Ms. Vahabzadeh announced the changes in the Chocolate event, which will now be held at
the Civic Center.Ms. Vahabzadeh provided the following background on the agenda item:
. The Special Events department has requested an arts element that welcomes people at
the entrance of the event.
. There is an opportunity for a 3D chalk art experience, which provides the opportunity for
attendees to take selfies with the art.
Ms. Pederson gave a background of the request. Ms. Pederson announced that the art will be
called the "Imaginarium Experience" and will be 3D art and will be a great opportunity to
experience and share an art piece via photographs. All of the art will be created with chalk,
the structure itself is a blank canvas, and the chalk will be on the walls and floor; the chalk floor
is preserved with hairspray..
Action: To approve the Chocolate Experience Temporary Art Project at a cost of $4,500.00 as
presented

d. ACTION: Glendale Arts Council Juried Fine Arts Exhibit
Staff asked the Commissioners to view the Glendale Arts Council Annual Juried Fine Arts
Exhibit and to select the purchase awards for the Municipal Art Collection for FY 2020. Per the
adopted FY2019-20 Arts Plan, the total purchase budget is $2,000.
Action: To approve the purchase of the following art pieces from the 2020 Glendale Arts
Council Juried Fine Arts Exhibit: Square Root Series #10 for $1,900 and Mueller Hydrant for
$1,600

6. STAFF UPDATES
Ms. Vahabzadeh shared the following:
. An invitation to the public opening celebration of the Juried Art Show this weekend.
. An invitation to the Boards and Commissions Appreciation Hockey Game on February
25th.
. Glendale Glitter & Glow is this weekend and the performance by the arts group, Vessel,
will be held on Saturday.
. The Plein Air Event has been moved to the Folk and Heritage Festival and will take
place on Saturday, February 29th. Judging will be at 3:30 p.m.
. This is the last meeting for Chair Cole, Vice Chair Bolognini, and Commissioner Fast. All
of their contributions are greatly appreciated.
7. COMMISSION COMMENTS
Commissioner Fast stated that it has been a pleasure serving on the Commission, he has
learned a lot, and plans to serve on another board or a commission at some point.
Vice Chair Bolognini commented that it has been fun getting to know staff and the
Commission. She stated that it felt like family.
Chair Cole commented that he appreciates staff and the other commissioners. He has an
overwhelming sense of accomplishment in regards to the new library public art. Chair Cole
hopes that the opportunity for the arts incubator is not dead and he hopes that the
Commissioners have more opportunity to weigh in on these issues in the future. Chair Cole
stated that the place for Arts in Economic Development is a good fit and relayed that the Arts
staff work very hard.
8. NEXT MEETING
The next regular meeting of the Glendale Arts Commission will be held on February 27 at 6:00
p.m., in the second floor Boardroom of the Glendale Public Library, 5959 W. Brown
St., Glendale, Arizona, 85302.
