NEW BUSINESS a. 2022 SUMMER READING PROGRAM UPDATE (Informational) Chief Librarian Beck introduced, Meridith Jenson -Benjamin., the Main library Administrative Librarian. Ms. Jenson -Benjamin stated that she co-chairs the programming committee and is responsible for all publicity for the library. Summer reading is a program where participants track their reading and earn rewards for hitting milestones and is for all ages. In 2016, per Pew Internet survey, 50% of American adults read less than 4 books per year. We also are trying to prevent "summer slide" where students can fall behind 2-4 months because of reading comprehension loss. The 2022 theme was Ocean of Possibilities (Ocean exploration and Oceanography), chosen by a national consortium, that also selects one artist. This year the artist was Sophie Blackall. The participants sign up online and track their reading minutes online or paper. One minute of reading is earning one point. The goal was to earn 1,000 points between June 1 st and August 1 st. Summer Reading Timeline: • January — SRP Team begins meeting. Anticipated a 20% growth rate from 2021. • March — Prizes were ordered. Reading records customized and designed. • April/May — Reached out to school and community groups to talk about Oceans of Possibilities. Began marketing via website, digital displays, calendars, water bills and creating video for schools/groups. • June -August — Program is live June 1 st. Volunteers helped with program registration and to distribute prizes. • August -September — Assessment. The complete analysis will not be available until late September when Maricopa County releases the results. From 2020-2022 there was a 197% increase in registered participants. From 2021-2022, it was 65%increase with most being adults. The Main library had 1,430 participants and Foothills had 1,310 participants. The Glendale libraries had 52% of finishers, Maricopa County had an average of 44%. Glendale's readers logged more than 3 million minutes of reading. The next step would be to get feedback on improvements. The 2023 theme is "Unity, kindness and togetherness" and the illustrator is Frank Morrison. Chair Johnson asked if there were any more questions. Member Snair asked if the theme is for the entire county. Ms. Jenson -Benjamin stated yes, and multiple states collaborate as well. Member Kocur asked how the prize reward system works. Ms. Jenson -Benjamin stated that the county works with some of the local businesses (Rubio's, Raising Cane's, Peter Piper Pizza, AZ Science Center, AZ Parks) to sponsor the program. The library added small toy prizes for the younger kids, candy for teens, and tote bags for adults along with the prizes the county supplied. 6. CHIEF LIBRARIAN UPDATE a.
