b. VELMA TEAGUE LIBRARY UPDATES AND TOUR
Chief Librarian Beck provided some historical background on the library, including that the
Velma Teague library is the oldest library and was built in 1971. He thanked everyone for
coming and introduced Velma Teague's Administrative Librarian Greg Kinder to the Board.
Administrative Librarian Greg Kinder stated that the library is named after the first librarian in
Glendale, Velma Teague. Previous libraries were housed in various vacant buildings, but Ms.
Velma Teague lobbied in the 1960's to have a library in Glendale. The library was built in
1971 and is 15,964 square feet. Ms. Velma Teague was told that the library would be named
after her but, unfortunately, passed away before the library was completed. There have been
several renovations throughout the years, most recently through a grant in 2014. The library
received new carpeting, the interior and exterior were painted, public restrooms remodeled,
ceiling tiles repaired, wiring clean-up work, and expanded the story time room. There are 14
staff members (librarians, security guards, volunteers) at the Velma Teague library.
Administrative Librarian Greg Kinder stated that there are all types of programming such as
story time, grow -play -learn, family craft, puppet shows, ghost scavenger hunt, teen holiday
craft, grab -n -go craft, mystery book club for adults, know & crochet, and musical
performances at the Amphitheatre. Administrative Librarian Greg Kinder started the walking
tour of the Velma Teague library.
Chair Johnson stated that the meeting will continue after the tour.
6. CHIEF LIBRARIAN UPDATE
Chief Librarian Beck updated the Board of the following:
• LibCon (December 4) -saw over 800 registrants and another 350-400 people attended the
programs held in the amphitheater. Approximately 1200-1500 people attended this event.
The library had a registration table along with several local businesses, Parks & Recs.,
Economic Development, and a variety of exhibitors. LibCon originally started at the Main
library and this is the second year it was held at Velma Teague. It was a successful event.
Mr. Beck said that Administrative Librarian Greg Kinder and all staff did a wonderful job.
• Grants -Over $600,000 in funding received over the last seven years from various grants
such as Mobile Office -to -Go and Mobile Hot -Spots. The library has 6-10 active grant writers.
Currently, grants are reviewed and submitted in December and January and in May they will
find out if they were approved.

• Channel 11 -Media coverage on LibCon will be on City of Glendale's Channel 11, TV,
YouTube, and Facebook
