FY2020-21 LSTA GRANT CYCLE IDEAS Library Administrator Dawn Wasley presented information on the five Library Services & Technology Act grant applications that have been submitted: • Kindergarten Readiness $25,500 - The goal of this project is to focus on preschool -aged children and their parents in this school readiness program. Traditional Story time's have been a standard in youth services but changing it to create the parental and child education component will make a more substantial impact on our community. • Alternative Formats for Children & Teens $25,000 Grant - The goal of this project is to focus on children and teenagers aged 3-18. We are looking specifically at alternative format materials, such as large print books and picture book audiobooks for these ages. The alternative format material has exploded this past year with materials for children and teenagers. Utilizing picture book audiobooks will allow pre -readers and beginning readers to start their reading journey on a stronger foot. Large print material for children and teens will provide extra support for struggling readers, as well as those with visual impairments, within our community. • Collections & Programming for Diverse Voices- The Library sees a need within communities for authors to represent their own stories, histories, and cultures. Collection development librarians will seek out dynamic names writing in the vein of the #ownvoices, including bestsellers, new and independent writers, and writers working in the margins and/or with smaller publishing houses. The Library will include Spanish language materials. The Library will focus on print fiction and nonfiction for adult audiences. The Library will work with existing book clubs at all library locations to incorporate diverse titles as part of their scheduled discussions. Programming may also include author events that introduce readers to a variety of cultures and life experiences. • Velma Teague Wi-Fi Hotspot $4000— Wi-Fi hotspots will allow the Velma Teague Library to provide internet services to patrons who may not have access due to financial barriers.
