NEW BUSINESS
1. Staff Liaison Leslie discussed the outcome of the GSC meeting regarding a
sharepoint page for the commission. She mentioned the hesitation from the GSC to
allow the sharepoint, which she agrees with. To prevent any future Open Meeting
Law issues that could potentially arise from a commission sharepoint, the GSC did
not approve of the Human Relations Commission having a sharepoint.
2. Commissioner Carbello discussed the desire to have subcommittees. She
brought up having a Strategic Plan subcommittee, which Chair Truelove reviewed.
Commissioner Carbello agreed to chair the subcommittee along with Commissioner
Smith and Chair Truelove, that will work on getting research on how to join or
become involved with a Regional Human Relations Commission. Commissioner
Lentz mentioned hosting or participating in events that would involve the Human
Relations Commission. Commissioners could help gather information from
attendees at City events, such as GAIN Night. The Commissioners requested that
the Staff Liaison review the June 9th City Council meeting to see what information
was included in the Parks and Recreation survey and if there was any interest from
Council to have commissioners help by attending events promoting the surveys to
get additional feedback and information.
Commissioner Andrade mentioned the idea of having City officials such as the
Police Chief, members of the City Council or community members that make up the
City of Glendale to have an open discussion with predetermined questions about
countrywide and city issues that are taking place. Commissioner Carbello agreed
and an open dialogue should be held to discuss the events that are occurring and
believes this would be a great recommendation of an event for the City.
Commissioner Andrade volunteered to Chair the subcommittee responsible
for coordinating such an event, with the help of Commissioner Carbello. Will present
information at the next Human Relations Commission. Commissioner Andrade
believes the topic of the conversation should be, "Is Glendale, Arizona a City of
diversity and inclusion," and what is the City doing to carry that out. Additionally,
Commissioner Lentz brought up attending block watch events and how great it was
and how it may be helpful for others to attend in the future because it was an
opportunity to chat with the Mayor.
3. Commissioner Carbello mentioned annexations and if the Human Relations
Commission should have a role in the meetings and believes it's a relations issue.
Commissioner Carbello mentioned the development of the Love's Truck Stop and
the issues that follow the development and asked if the commission should be
involved. Staff Liaison Leslie mentioned that is not what the commission
should focus on, however, as constituents, the commissioners are welcome to
attend the Council meetings that discuss certain developments and voice their
concerns or approval at that time, in a constituent capacity and not in commissioner
capacity.
4. Chair Truelove brought up the status of the Resource Guide that the commission
was previously working on. The guide was a compilation of resources available in
the City for constituents. Commissioner Andrade confirmed with Commissioner
Carbello that the guide is pretty much finalized, it just needed some updating.

Commissioner Carbello will send the Resource Guide to Staff Liaison to disperse to
commissioners to discuss at the next Human Relations Commission meeting in July.
5. Commissioner Carbello confirmed that the workforce training class she had
previously mentioned was on hold for next summer (2021). Chair Truelove asked
if commissioners would be interested in having Commissioner Carbello present a
short finance presentation and how it may be presented in the future to a bigger
group. The idea of hosting an intramural badminton idea has been postponed due
to COVID-19.
6. Peace Summit is something that the Commission is interested in hosting or
attending. Commissioner Carbello will do a follow-up with Commissioner Lentz at
the next meeting.
7. Staff Liaison Leslie will follow-up on the Commission's request to obtain
information about what needs to go to GSC and/or City Council when it involves
hosting events, etc.
8. The FASFA workshop that was going to be held by Commissioner Andrade has
been postponed at this time.
9. Commissioner Carbello had questions regarding current events and the
demonstrations that were taking place throughout Arizona and the Country. She
asked Staff Liaison if there had been any additional communications from the City
other than one she had seen. Staff Liaison was only aware of one from the Police
Chief on the Glendale PD media page and mentioned that there had not been a
protestor turnout like other cities.
10. Commissioner Lentz is going to reach out to an individual from the Police
Department to see if there are any events or block watches scheduled that the
commission could attend, if they were available or interested.
6. STAFF REPORTS
a. There were no additional items reported by staff.
7. COMMISSION COMMENTS AND SUGGESTIONS
Commissioner Smith believes the commission is on the right path and looking
forward to see how the ideas will go into place and things are going pretty good.
Commissioner Carbello asked who will follow up on the survey information and how
the City would like to move forward with that and if the Commission can help at all.
Staff Liaison Leslie said she would look into this.
Commissioner Andrade provided a few ideas for potential events such as

of the Subcommittee list to Staff Liaison Leslie to disperse to staff.
