CITY OF GLENDALE
WHEREAS, sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) is a leading cause of death in the
United States, claiming more than 366,000 lives each year—approximately one
person every 90 seconds; and
WHEREAS, performing Cardiopulmonary-Resuscitation (CPR) and having an
automated external defibrillator (AED) immediately available in public buildings
and heavy traffic areas can increase the likelihood of survival by 75 percent or
more; and
WHEREAS, A goal of the American Heart Association is to improve by-stander
CPR response from 31% to 62% by increasing training from 12.3 million to 20
million people; and
WHEREAS, The Glendale Fire Department provides free one-hour CCC-CPR
and AED classes to the public upon request of businesses, clubs, groups,
organizations, and schools, and has taught more than 27,000 youth and adults
CCC-CPR and how to use an AED since 2007; and
WHEREAS, The City of Glendale has been designated a “Heart Safe City” by the
Arizona Department of Health Services.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Jerry P. Weiers, Mayor of the City of Glendale, Arizona,
on behalf of the City Council, do hereby proclaim June 1-7, 2018, as:
National CPR and AED
Awareness Week
and call upon the citizens of Glendale to join me in recognizing the importance of
bystander CCC-CPR and the use of an AED.
