HomeMy WebLinkAboutProclamations, Opinions, Awards - Historical - 6/12/2018 CITY OF GLENDALE WHEREAS, Drowning Impact Awareness month will raise awareness that the number and impact of all drownings in Arizona affects everyone; and WHEREAS, in 2017, there were a total of 153 water related incidents in Maricopa and Pinal Counties resulting in 61 deaths, 17 of which were children; and in Glendale in 2017, there was one water related incident which resulted in no deaths; and WHEREAS, a child, teen or adult drowning can happen to any family regardless of education, race or socio-economic background; and WHEREAS, families can take simple steps to protect their children, teens and adult family members around water to avoid the tragedy of the unnecessary loss of life; and WHEREAS, initiatives led by the Drowning Prevention Coalition of Arizona, Phoenix Children’s Hospital, Banner Cardon Children’s Hospital, the YMCA, local fire departments and others have helped raised water safety awareness in communities across Arizona; and WHEREAS, keeping children and families healthy and safe is a priority of the city of Glendale, the Glendale Fire Department, the Glendale Parks and Recreation Department, and many other prevention institutions in Arizona, and providing education and raising awareness will increase the understanding of effective ways to prevent drownings; NOW, THEREFORE, I, Jerry P. Weiers, Mayor of the City of Glendale, Arizona, on behalf of the City Council, do hereby proclaim the month of August 2018, as: DROWNING IMPACT AWARENESS MONTH and call upon the citizens of Glendale to join me in recognizing the importance of protecting your children and families around water at all times.
