HomeMy WebLinkAboutProclamations, Opinions, Awards - Historical - 6/14/2019 CITY OF GLENDALE WHEREAS, the U.S. Army was founded when the Continental Congress of 1775 authorized enlistment of riflemen to serve the United colonies for one year as the American Continental Army; and WHEREAS, George Washington was unanimously appointed the first General and Commander in Chief of all continental forces; and WHEREAS, on this day the United States Army will recognize with great pride the thousands of young Americans who have answered, and will continue to answer, the call to service; and WHEREAS, those young men and women have shown a profound sense of duty, selfless service and respect through acts of great honor, integrity and personal courage; and WHEREAS, the All-Volunteer Army is a uniquely American phenomenon that began as an experiment at the height of the Cold War and the quality and success of the volunteer force remains unprecedented; and WHEREAS, today, the United States Army is recognized as the premier army in the world, with America’s volunteer soldiers serving in 120 countries; and WHEREAS, American soldiers are voluntarily foregoing comfort and wealth, facing hardship and sacrifice, and confronting danger in defense of the Nation, the United States Army is and will remain a testament to the success of Army recruiters in attracting the Nation’s best and brightest to volunteer; and NOW, THEREFORE, I, Jerry P. Weiers, the Mayor of the City of Glendale, do hereby designate June 14th as the United States Army’s 244th birthday United States Army’s 244th Birthday and I urge all citizens to join with me in this salute as we express our gratitude to those who have served and those who are now serving to protect our nation and its freedoms.
