BROWN ST. GLENDALE, ARIZONA 85302 SEPTEMBER 11, 2019 6:OOP.M. 1. CALL TO ORDER Chair Jessica Koory called the meeting to order at 6:00 p.m. 2. ROLL CALL Present: Jessica Koory, Chair Karen Aborne, Board Member Jon Davis, Board Member Gary Johnson, Vice Chair Diane Kocur, Board Member Timothy Ndavu, Board Member Absent: Teresa Collett, Board Member Hadiyah Flores, Board Member Also Present: Michael Beck, Chief Librarian Dawn Wasley, Library Administrator Kayla Martinez, Library Administrative Support Specialist 3. CITIZEN COMMENTS None. 4. APPROVAL OF THE MINUTES a. APPROVAL OF AUGUST 31, 2019 MINUTES ACTION: Library Advisory Board Minutes of August 31, 2019 Vice Chair Johnson moved, Board Member Ndavu made the second, to approve the August 31, 2019 Library Advisory Board meeting minutes with the following changes: • Page 3, "The Glendale Public Libraries serve," should be "The Glendale Public Libraries serve" • Page 3, "I encourage all residents to visit one of our library branches this week, including the new Heroes branch, located within the Heroes Regional Park..." should be "I encourage all residents to visit one of our library branches this week, including the new Heroes branch, located within the Heroes Regional Park, ..." • The movement of "Chair Koory thanked Board Member Kocur for the idea and draft letter." From page 3 to page 4. NEW BUSINESS a. SENIOR TECH ACADEMY PROGRAM INFORMATION: Library staff will present an overview of the Senior Tech Academy Program, and it's partnership with Glendale Community College. Board Members will have the opportunity to ask questions. Chief Librarian Beck introduced Ms. Marlene Jacobson, librarian and E -Resources Expert at the Glendale Public Library. Ms. Jacobson presented on the current partnership program that the library has with Glendale Community College called the Senior Tech Academy Program that is supported by an LSTA grant from the Arizona State Library, Archives & Public Records. The program is a series of computer classes for seniors that was designed to increase the comfort level of seniors with technology. The presentation gave an overview of the classes the program offered, such as: • Computer Basics 101- key concepts with lessons on the different types of computers, computer hardware, computer operating system, computer desktop exploration, windows settings, and how to use a mouse/touchpad. • Computer Basics 102- key concepts with lessons on the different programs, creation of files and folders, keyboard shortcuts, and the use of the Recycle Bin. • Internet Basics 101- key concepts with lessons on how to connect to the internet, using search engines, navigating a website, and how to click smart. • Internet Basics 102- key concepts with lessons on internet privacy, creating accounts and passwords, and keeping safe on the internet. • Email Basis 101- an overview of Email and its services, email settings, email security, and basic email functions. • Email Basics 102- an overview of more extensive email functions, email attachments, contact and labels, and filters. Chair Koory, along with the rest of the Board Members, thanked Ms. Jacobson for her presentation. b. HEROES REGIONAL PARK LIBRARY UPDATE INFORMATION: Chief Librarian Beck will update the Board about the Heroes Regional Park Library progress, programs and service measure. Board Members will have the opportunity to ask questions. Chief Librarian Beck updated the Board Members on current Heroes Regional Park Library operations and statistics. Highlights included the following: • Between May 18th and July 31st, 11,000 people had visited. • Between May 18th and July 31st, there were 850 new borrowers. • Between May 18th and July 31st, there were over 8,500 items checked out. • Between May 18th and July 31st, there were 60 public programs that over 1800 patrons attended. • The library's collection has grown from 9,000 to 12,000 items. • Youth storytimes have become very popular and are being held twice a week. • Saturday, October 5th is CSI Forensics Day, a partnered event with Glendale Police Department. • The first order of Memorial bricks will be sent out for engraving. • New staffing changes, one of which is the Administrative Librarian position. C. LIBRARY BOARD ORDINANCE INFORMATION: Chief Librarian Beck will provide an overview of the Library Advisory Board ordinance. Board Members will have the opportunity to ask questions. Chief Librarian Beck provided all Board Members a copy of the Library Advisory Board Ordinance and presented a brief overview, highlighting the following: • The city created the Library Advisory Board. • The Board is made up of nine members in which two are teen members. • The Quorum for The Library Advisory Board is five members. • The city council appoints the Chairperson. • The Vice Chair is elected annually by the Advisory Board. • The Advisory Board is capable of bringing forth agenda items and topics to discuss or pursue. Chief Librarian Beck informed the Board that the Government Services Committee would be meeting on October 9th and that he has followed up with the City Clerk regarding the current vacancy and will continue to work with them to get the positions filled. Chair Koory asked if the Government Services were aware that the Advisory Board does not have a Mayoral appointee. Chief Librarian Beck explained that they are aware and that the City Clerks office will work with Government Services on the matter. 7. CHIEF LIBRARIAN UPDATE a. This report allows the Chief Librarian of the Community Services Department to provide the Board of any updates. Chief Librarian Beck updated the Board of the following: • The Friends of the Glendale Public Library are looking into a Yogurtini and Chipotle fundraiser. • The Friends of the Glendale Public Library are partnering with a local non-profit to hold a walk-a-thon fundraiser at Metrocenter Mall on October 19th. • September is Library card sign up month, and all who sign up will be eligible of winning a $50 Amazon gift card, courtesy of the Friends of the Glendale Public Library. • The library is currently working with Camelback Ranch, the White Sox, and the Dodgers on a Spring Training Reading Program that will offer spring training tickets as a spring reading incentive. • In the late spring, the library was awarded a $25,000 Teen Level -up grant specified for teen spaces for new furniture, signage and collection materials for all locations. • An overview of how programs are chosen for the library based on the needs of the community. 8. BOARD MEMBER COMMENTS AND SUGGESTIONS Board Member Ndavu suggested looking into the possibility of adding a crosswalk to the road north of Heroes because it is not very pedestrian -friendly. Board Member Aborne commented on the City Clerks website and that it has not been updated and still states Board Member Collett as the Vice Chair rather than Board Member Johnson. Board Member Aborne informed the Board that the City Clerk's website offered a fifteen -minute basic training video available for all City Board Members. Board Member Aborne also notified the Board that her Council Member wrote about Heroes Regional Park Library being recognized as an award recipient at the Arizona Forward Environmental Excellence Awards Gala. Chair Koory asked Chief Librarian Beck if he could please keep everyone updated on the outcome of the Arizona Forward Environmental Excellence Award Gala. Chief Librarian Beck agreed to do so. Chair Koory commented on how well Ms. Jacobson presented on the Senior Tech Academy Program. 9. NEXT MEETING The next regular meeting of the Library Advisory Board will be held on October 9th at 6:00 p.m., in the Board Room of the Main Library, located at 5959 W. Brown St., Glendale, Arizona, 85302. 10. ADJOURNMENT Vice Chair Johnson moved, Board Member Davis made the second, to adjourn the meeting at 6:47 p.m. Motion carried 6 — 0.
