BROWN ST. GLENDALE, ARIZONA 85302 OCTOBER 9, 2019 6:OOP.M. 1. CALL TO ORDER Vice Chair Gary R. Johnson called the meeting to order at 6:10 p.m. 2. ROLL CALL Present: Gary Johnson, Vice -Chair Karen Aborne, Board Member Jon Davis, Board Member Diane Kocur, Board Member Timothy Ndavu, Board Member Absent: Jessica Koory, Chair Teresa Collett, Board Member Hadiyah Flores, Board Member Also Present: Michael Beck, Chief Librarian Dawn Wasley, Library Administrator Kayla Martinez, Library Administrative Support Specialist Attendees: Jenna Goad Hannah Verdin Anna Caggiano 3. CITIZEN COMMENTS None, 4. APPROVAL OF THE MINUTES a. ACTION: Library Advisory Board Minutes of September 11, 2019. Board Member Ndavu moved, Board Member Kocur made the second, to approve the September 11, 2019 Library Advisory Board meeting minutes as written. Motion carried 5 — 0. NEW BUSINESS a. CENSUS 2020 OUTREACH. INFORMATION: City staff will present and discuss with the Board about the purpose, importance and outreach efforts of the upcoming census. Chief Librarian Beck introduced Assistant Director of Public Affairs, Ms. Jenna Goad. Ms. Goad shared with the Board the following information regarding the 2020 Census and the efforts of its outreach: • Census day is April 1, 2020 and all responses will need to be in by the end of April. • The Census Bureau has begun hiring temporary workers. • Beginning this year, you can respond to the census online. • The Census Bureau will be sending employees door to door for those who have not responded by late April. • Any information collected will not be shared with any other government agency or law enforcement. • There is $3,000+ annually in state, federal and regional funding. • The funding provides cities with important programs such things as public safety, education, roads and healthcare. • When members of our community don't participate, that funding will go to other cities and states. • Remind everyone of the importance of participating. Ms. Goad advised the Board that if anyone has any questions to please feel free to ask. Board Member Kocur asked if the Census has anything to do with citizenship and if those who don't have citizenship can participate. Ms. Goad informed the Board that anyone who is living in the United States as of April 1 st, 2020 should participate in the Census and that there are no questions on the Census regarding citizenship. Ms. Verdin asked if there were anyone available who could speak to the patrons who speak Spanish. Ms. Goad reassured Ms. Verdin that there are members on her team that can present the Census information to Spanish-speaking patrons. Vice Chair Johnson thanked Ms. Goad for her presentation. b. POP CULTURE PROGRAM EVENTS AT VELMA TEAGUE INFORMATION: Library staff will present and update the Board about the upcoming Halloween Comic Fest and LibConWest events taking place at the Velma Teague Branch. Board members will have the opportunity to ask questions. Chief Librarian Beck introduced Hannah Verdin, who is a librarian at the Velma Teague Library. Ms. Verdin Spoke to the Board about the large-scale events that have taken place at the Velma Teague Library, those consisting of: Free Comic Book Day • An annual event that occurs on the first Saturday of May. • The event promotes reading and literacy. • Free comic books are given out, and patrons are given the opportunity to interact with artists, comic writers, and cosplay actors. • As of last year, the local comic book store Drawn to Comics approached the library and asked if they would like to partner up with them in which they agreed and have been doing so ever since. • Last year 1,200 people attended, and this year it grew to 1,700 people having attended. Halloween Comic Fest • The event will be on the 26th of October. • 1,500 to 2,000 comics will be given out during the event. • There will be Halloween -themed decorations and games such as a zombie shooting gallery. • There are 20 vendors and many cosplay actors that will be at the event. LibConWest • The Glendale Library's version of Comic -Con. • In the past, this event has been held at the Main Library, but this year it will be held at Velma Teague. • There will be 50+ vendors. • The Library has partnered with multiple downtown shops in a scavenger hunt. • Glendale Glitters will begin right after the LibConWest event. • In the past, there have been 1,000+ attendees and this year, much more are anticipated. Vice Chair Johnson thanked Ms. Verdin for her presentation. C. BOARD APPRECIATION LETTER FOR RECENT RETIREES ACTION: Board Members will review and sign Library Advisory Board Appreciation Letters for recent Library Staff Retirees. Chief Librarian Beck shared with the Board that there are three retirees that The Glendale Public Library would like to recognize, Carolyn Grote with 21 years, Peggy Campbell with 22 years, and Cindy Burmeister with 26 years. Chief Librarian Beck passed around all three letters that required all Board Members signatures. Board Member Ndavu asked if those Board Members who are not present will be able to sign the letters. Chief Librarian Beck informed the Board that he would coordinate with those who are not present to have them sign at a later time. d. HEROES REGIONAL PARK LIBRARY INFORMATION: Chief Librarian Beck will update the Board about the Heroes Regional Park Library progress, programs and service measures. Board Members will have the opportunity to ask questions. Chief Librarian Beck updated the Board members on current Heroes Regional Park Library operations and statistics. Highlights included the following: • Heroes started at 9,000 volumes and are now close to 14,000. • The per -volume circulation rate is higher than any of the other branches. • In the month of September, there have been 28 programs with 400 attendees. • The Junior CSI Academy event had 84 participants. • The first order of bricks is currently being engraved. • Youth Storytime rooms are quickly filling up. • 377 Independence High School students signed up for a library card. • Heroes now have a fully stocked Book Sale area. Vice Chair Johnson asked the Board if there were any questions or comments for Chief Librarian Beck. Board Member Aborne shared how impressed she is with the number of books that are available in the Book Sale area. Vice Chair Johnson thanked Chief Librarian Beck. 6. CHIEF LIBRARIAN UPDATE a. This report allows the Chief Librarian of the Community Services Department to update the Board. The Board is prohibited from discussing or acting on any of the items presented by the Staff since they are not itemized on the Library Advisory Board Agenda. Chief Librarian Beck updated the Board members of the following: • The Friends of the Glendale Public Library have a fundraiser Saturday, October 19th, at 7 a.m at Metrocenter Mall. • Glendale Public Library had been nominated for two awards, one being AZ Forward. Neither award was won, but there was much recognition for our Heroes Library features and public artwork. • Glendale Public Library Recently participated in the Stand Up for Veterans event that was held at Glendale Community College. • Yucca district meeting will be held at our Heroes Regional Library location on November 14th. • Between October and April is when most outreach is being done, and the Library will have tables and events such as at Glendale Glitters. • There will be appropriate follow-up regarding the replacement of vacant Library Advisory Board positions. 7. BOARD MEMBER COMMENTS AND SUGGESTIONS Board Member Kocur suggested finding a way to help people fill out the Census questionnaire. Board Member Kocur also asked if any Board Members would be interested in contributing to a Library Advisory Board brick. Chief Librarian Beck told Board Member Kocur that he is more than happy to put the topic on the Agenda for the next meeting. Board Member Ndavu commented on the amazing library staff. Board Member Davis commented on how amazing it was to hear that so many high school students are now involved with the library. 8. NEXT MEETING The next regular meeting of the Library Advisory Board will be held on November 13th at 6:00 p.m., in the Board Meeting Room of the Main Library, located at 5959 W. Brown St., Glendale, Arizona, 85302. 9. ADJOURNMENT Board Member Ndavu moved, Board Member Kocur made the second, to adjourn the meeting at 6:50 p.m. Motion carried 5 — 0.
