ROLL CALL Present: Carrie Richards, Chair Eva Ndavu, Vice Chair Thomas Cole, Commissioner Helen Fokszanskyj-Conti, Commissioner Cheryl Gangemi, Commissioner Absent: Bernadette Bolognini, Commissioner Mark Fast, Commissioner Also Present: Mojgan Vahabzadeh, Arts & Culture Program Manager Michael Beck, Chief Librarian Jana Weldon, Associate 3. CITIZEN COMMENTS If citizens wish to speak on a matter concerning the Glendale Arts Commission that is not on the printed agenda, please complete a Citizen Comments Card and provide it to the designated staff person prior to the beginning of the meeting. Once your name is called by the Chairperson, please proceed to the podium and state your name and address for the record. Please limit your comments to a period of three minutes or less. 4. APPROVAL OF THE MINUTES a. Arts Commission Minutes of February 22, 2018 and March 22, 2018. NEW BUSINESS a. Gallery 37 Summer Project Update Mojgan Vahabzadeh, Arts and Culture Program Manager provided the project details. She said that through the FY 2017-18 Arts Projects Plan, the Commission approved funding in the amount of $10,000 for the Gallery 37 project, an initiative of the West Valley Arts Council. She explained that Gallery 37 is a long running school -to -work student apprenticeship program that results in the creation and permanent placement of a professional piece of public art in the West Valley. For summer 2018, Glendale is partnering with the West Valley Arts Council to do a Gallery 37 project for the Elsie McCarthy Sensory Garden. She stated that Betsy Etchart and Lichen Frank will be the artist working on the project. Staff provided information with pictures detailing the proposed renovation of the garden. The project proposes a renovation of the Renewal Garden that engages the senses of sight, hearing, sound and smell. Ms. Vahabzadeh stated that for this summer initiative to move forward, an increase of $5,000 in total funding for the project is requested. Chairperson Richards asked for a motion to approve additional funding in the amount up to $5,000 for Gallery 37 Summer Art Project. FY 2018-2019 Performing Arts Partnership Program Staff presented information about the FY 2018-19 Performing Arts Partnership Program and requested the Commission decide on the date to conduct the in person presentation of applications meeting. Ms. Vahabzadeh stated that to date, they have received eleven applications and they have enough funding to actually fund the eleven applicants if they all meet the required criteria and are selected. She said each Commissioner will receive a packet to take home and review each applicant's proposal. She explained that this year, the Commissioners had a choice to hear each applicant's proposal in-person or to just consider reviewing the information and providing their recommendations for project funding. The dates to consider for a meeting or the in-person presentations are May 7 or May 9, 2018. Commissioner Cole recommended that the Commissioners individually review the applications and then meet to discuss and vote on each proposal. The Commissioners were all in agreement. Chairperson Richards asked for a motion to approve meeting on May 7, 2018 for the FY 2018-19 Performing Arts Partnership Program proposals meeting. Vote to Vacate the Arts Commission Meeting of May 24, 2018 Staff requested that due to an earlier meeting of the Arts Commission in May, the Arts Commission should consider a vote to vacate the May 24, 2018 meeting of the Commission. Chairperson Richards asked for a motion to vacate the May 24, 2018 meeting of the Arts Commission. STAFF UPDATES Heroes Park Update Jana Weldon, Arts Program Associate, provided the update. She stated there will be a meet and greet at the Yucca District Meeting on Thursday, May 3rd, at 6:30 p.m. at Coyote Ridge Elementary School. This meeting is to introduce Heroes Park public art project artist, Pete Goldlust. Before work begins on the design for the public library features, the artist wants to hear how residents feel about the park and the new branch library. Mr. Goldlust will listen and engage with the community as part of his creative process. Ms. Weldon said she and city staff will be on hand to provide a brief overview of the public art process leading up to this point. 7. NEXT MEETING The next regular meeting of the Glendale Arts Commission will be held on June 28, 2018 at 6:00 p.m. in the Boardroom on the second floor of the Glendale Public Library, 5959 W. Brown St., Glendale, Arizona, 85302. 8. ADJOURNMENT Chairperson Richards asked for a motion to adjourn.
