5. NEW BUSINESS
a. Centerline District Arts and Cultural Initiative — Applicant Presentations
Mojgan Vahabzadeh, Arts and Culture Program Manager, presented the next item. She said the
Centerline Arts and Cultural Initiative is an application -based, competitive funding opportunity,
which is part of the FY 2017-18 Arts Projects Plan approved by the Arts Commission. She noted
the goal of this initiative is to motivate, increase and support free cultural events and
performances to enrich the quality of life and experiences of all Glendale citizens, while
increasing foot traffic in the Centerline District. As qualifying applications are received, the
applicants are invited to present their proposals before the Glendale Arts Commission for
funding consideration. Members of two applicant organizations, Childsplay and Driftwood
Quintet, presented their proposals to the Arts Commission for funding consideration.
Ernesto Ortiz and Katie B' Jarvis from Childsplay presented.
In a partnership with Brelby Theatre, Childsplay will provide a free public performance for
teachers, children and family audiences at the Brelby Theatre in downtown Glendale. The
performance will serve as an outreach tool for Childsplay to connect with teachers through a free
theatre experience for them and their families. The performance will be open to the public,
bringing family specific theatre to downtown Glendale. Childsplay anticipates the performance
will reach approximately 75 Glendale teachers and residents. A grant from the Commission will
support the cost of production including theatre rental fees, artist and production materials.
Next, Dominique Holley and Melissa Malork from Driftwood Quintet presented.
Driftwood Quintet will provide three public performances with their Centerline District Residency
further exemplifying their goal with this project. The performances feature a children's concert
hosted by the Velma Teague Library with stories and musical accompaniments, a video game
concert hosted by the comic book store Drawn to Comics and traditional orchestral concert
experience in a chamber music setting at the Glendale Civic Center. Driftwood's main goal is to
make high quality chamber music performances easily accessible to audience members who not
normally have these experiences. .
The Arts Commission discussed the two applications presented to them. They noted that both
applicants had an excellent reputation with the Glendale community as well as both provide high
quality programs.
Acting Chair, Commissioner Cole asked for a motion to approve funding for Childsplay's project
in the amount of $7,500 for the FY 2017/18 Centerline Arts and Cultural Initiative.
