BROWN STREET GLENDALE, ARIZONA 85302 DECEMBER 7, 2017 6:00 P.M. 1. CALL TO ORDER 2. ROLL CALL Present: Eva Ndavu, Vice Chair Bernadette Bolognini, Commissioner Thomas Cole, Commissioner Mark Fast, Commissioner Helen Fokszanskyj-Conti, Commissioner Absent: Carrie Richards, Chair Cheryl Gangemi, Commissioner Also Present: Mojgan Vahabzadeh, Arts & Culture Program Manager Michael Beck, Chief Librarian 3. CITIZEN COMMENTS 4. APPROVAL OF THE MINUTES Arts Commission Minutes of October 26, 2017. Motioned by Commissioner Bernadette Bolognini, seconded by Commissioner Mark Fast AYE: Vice Chair Eva Ndavu Commissioner Bernadette Bolognini Commissioner Thomas Cole Commissioner Mark Fast Commissioner Helen Fokszanskyj-Conti Other: Chair Carrie Richards (ABSENT) Commissioner Cheryl Gangemi (ABSENT) Passed 5. NEW BUSINESS a. The FY 2018-19 Arts Project Planning Discussion Staff provided a summary on this item. In an attempt to align with the City of Glendale's FY 2018-19 budget process, it is requested that the Commission work with staff to consider projects and programs for the purpose of developing the FY 2018-19 Arts Projects Plan. The Commissioners discussed items for consideration that will be reviewed for formal approval at the January 2018 meeting of the Arts Commission. The Commission discussed projects that would continue to take place in FY 2018-19. Ms. Vahabzadeh asked the Commission to think about community engagement art projects the Commission would like to consider for the future. The Commission also discussed professionally updating the Arts Master Plan. The cost for which may be $25,000 to $50,000. The last Glendale Arts Master Plan was completed in 2005. After discussions, Ms. Vahabzadeh indicated the Commission will vote to approve the FY 2018-19 Arts Projects Plan at the January meeting. b. Upcoming Community Engagement Arts Events Staff updated the Arts Commission on the upcoming arts events to be held in conjunction with the Glendale Glitter & Glow Block Party and the Glendale Chocolate Affaire Festival. In addition, staff presented information about two new opportunities to present arts programming during the month of February. The Arts Commission voted to recommend approval of funding for interactive arts projects to be presented at the City signature events. Vice Chair Eva Ndavu asked for a motion on the items discussed. A MOTION was MADE by Commissioner Cole to APPROVE funding for the Glendale Chocolate Affaire/Plein Air Festival for the City Signature Events Interactive Arts Projects in the amount of $3,750. Commissioner Bolognini SECONDED the MOTION, which carried unanimously. A MOTION was MADE by Commissioner Fast to APPROVE funding for the Transfix Performance for the City Signature Events Interactive Arts Projects in the amount of $4000. Commissioner Cole SECONDED the MOTION, which carried unanimously. A MOTION was MADE by Commissioner Cole to APPROVE funding for Paint Night for the City Signature Events Interactive Arts Projects in the amount not to exceed $6,750. Commissioner Bolognini SECONDED the MOTION. Commissioner Fast voted Nay. A MOTION was MADE by Commissioner Bolognini to APPROVE funding for the Folk and Heritage Festival for the City Signature Events Interactive Arts Projects in the amount of $1,800. Commissioner Fast SECONDED the MOTION, which carried unanimously. A MOTION was MADE by Commissioner Cole to APPROVE funding for the African American Artist Talk in the amount of $250. Commissioner Bolognini SECONDED theMOTION, which carried unanimously. C. Vote to Change the Date of the January Meeting of the Arts Commission Vote to Change the Date of the January Meeting of the Arts Commission The Commission discussed and voted to move the January 25, 2018 meeting of the Arts Commission to Wednesday, January 3, 2018, to be held at the Fruit Packing Shed at Sahuaro Ranch Park. This is in order to preview and select artwork for purchase from the Annual Glendale Arts Council's Juried Fine Art Exhibition. STAFF UPDATES Staff provided a few updates: • Arizona Broadway Theatre: A Charlie Brown Christmas presented at the Glendale Main Library Auditorium, Wednesday, December 13, 4 p.m. • The Best Christmas Pageant Ever -Murphy Park Amphitheater, Saturday, December 9, 2-3:30 p.m. • Annual Veterans Day Ceremony held Saturday, November 11, 2017 at 9:00 a.m. • Glendale History Walk sidewalk repairs • West Valley Arts Council partnership project - Gallery 37 • Hockey game on January 12, 2018 7. COMMISSION COMMENTS The Commissioners wished everyone safe and happy holidays. 8. NEXT MEETING The next meeting of the Glendale Arts Commission will be held on Wednesday, January 3, 2018, 6:00 p.m., at the Fruit Packing Shed at Sahuaro Ranch Park, Glendale, Arizona. 9.
