ARTS COMMISSION MEETING
GLENDALE PUBLIC LIBRARY

The meeting was called to order at approximately 6:06pm by Chairperson Carrie
Richards. Vice Chair Anne Owens and Commissioners, Bernadette Bolognini, Eva
Ndavu, Mark Fast and Thomas Cole were in attendance. Commissioner Nadine
Yuhasz was absent and excused.
Representing city staff was Mojgan Vahabzadeh, Arts and Culture Program
Manager, and Mike Beck, Chief Librarian.
Special Guest attending: Helen Fokszanskyj-Conti, future Commission member,
and Denise Kazmierczak and her son Cody Kazmierczak.
Approval of Minutes — May 26, 2016
A MOTION was MADE by Vice Chair Owens to APPROVE the Arts
Commission meeting minutes from the April 28, 2016 meeting. Commissioner
Ndavu SECONDED the MOTION, which carried unanimously.
Business From the Floor
At this time the Commission will hear comments from the public. There were no
comments.
Loyalty Oath of Office and Recognition for Commissioners
Staff recognized the newly reappointed Commission Vice Chair Eva Ndavu
(Cactus District) and Commission Chair Carrie Richards (Cholla District). They
both took the Boards and Commissions Loyalty Oath of Office.
Staff and the Commission also recognized outgoing Commission Vice Chair Anne
Owens (Barrel District) and Commissioner Nadine Yuhasz (Cholla District) for
their dedicated service to the City of Glendale and the Arts Commission. Ms.
Vahabzadeh presented Vice Chair Owens with an appreciation plaque and a pin.
Arts Acquisitions and Deaccession Policy Discussion
Ms. Vahabzadeh provided a brief summary of the Deaccession Policy. She had
previously asked the Commission to look over the draft which would be discussed
and voted on this evening. After a short discussion, the Arts Commission formally
adopted the recommended policies in compliance with the current guidelines as
discussed. This adoption is seen as a first necessary step to review and update (if
needed) the "Guidelines for the Arts" by the end of the next fiscal year.
A MOTION was MADE by Commissioner Cole to ADOPT the recommended
guideline policy of the Acquisitions and Deaccession for "Guidelines for the
Arts" Master Plan, as amended. Commissioner Fast SECONDED the
MOTION, which carried unanimously.
Centerline District Arts and Cultural Partnershia Initiative
Staff shared and discussed information regarding the draft application developed
for this funding opportunity in support of visual and performing arts events in the
Centerline District of Glendale. This new initiative is part of the FY 2016-17 Arts
Projects Plan approved by the Arts Commission to motivate, increase and support
free cultural events and performances to enrich the quality of life of all Glendale
citizens, while increasing foot traffic in the Centerline District.
Ms. Vahabzadeh noted the Centerline District is bounded by 43rd Avenue to the
east, 67th Avenue to the west, Myrtle Avenue to the north, and Ocotillo Road to
the south. She stated this funding opportunity will have a rolling deadline for
applications of 5:00 p.m. every first Monday of each month starting in August
2016 to March 2017.
Commissioner Bolognini stated she was glad this included Ocotillo given that this
project was very important to that area.
Ms. Vahabzadeh stated this was a pilot program that will require feedback. The
Commission all agreed to move forward with this project.
Review of FY 2015-16 Accomplishments
Staff reviewed and facilitated a discussion on the accomplishments of the Public
Art Program over the course of the current fiscal year based on the FY 2015-16 Art

Projects Plan. Ms. Vahabzadeh provided a presentation and passed out an
informational packet.
Vote to Vacate the July and August Meetings of the Commission
The Arts Commission voted to vacate the July and August Arts Commission
Meetings. The next meeting will be held September 22, 2016.
Staff Updates - Glendale Happening's
"Nature Nurtures Us" a Photography Exhibit at Gallery Glendale with hours from 6
to 9 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays; Thursdays from 4 to 9 p.m., June 3 to July 30.
The Gallery will also be open during the Westgate Independence Day celebrations
from 5 to 9 p.m. on Sunday, July 3.
New Commission member - Helen Fokszanskyj-Conti will be attending the next
Commission meeting on September 22, 2016.
Commission Comments
The Commissioners thanked Vice Chair Anne Owens for her service to the City of
Glendale and for being a great asset to the arts community. She will be greatly
missed.
Ms. Vahabzadeh wished everyone a great and safe summer.

Chairperson Richards asked for a motion to adjourn.
A MOTION was MADE by Commissioner Ndavu to ADJOURN the meeting
Commissioner Cole SECONDED the MOTION, which carried unanimously.
The meeting adjourned at 7:25 p.m.
The next meeting of the Glendale Arts Commission will be held on Thursday,
September 22, 2016 @ 6:00 p.m. at the Large Meeting Room, first floor, Glendale
Public Library, 5959 West Brown Street, Glendale, Arizona.
