HomeMy WebLinkAboutMinutes - Minutes - Arts Commission - Meeting Date: 5/18/2011 (3)CITY OF GLENDALE, ARIZONA MINUTES OF THE REGULAR MEETING OF THE ARTS COMMISSION HELD WEDNESDAY, MAY 18, 2011 LIBRARY BOARD CONFERENCE ROOM SECOND FLOOR 9802 N 59TH AVENUE GLENDALE, ARIZONA 4:00pm. The meeting was called to order at 4:05p.m. by Sue Komernicky, Library and Arts Director. Commission members, Scott Mink, Janine Barbour, Diane Lesser, Paul Dagostino and Carol Ladd were in attendance. Representing city staffwere, Mojgan Vahabzadeh, Library Graphics Coordinator and Judy Fleming, Public Arts Coordinator. Guest in attendance was Cheryl Kennedy, Library Manager. Chairperson Darrell Criswell and Commissioner M.B. Finnerty were absent. A MOTION was MADE by Commission member Barbour to APPROVE the minutes of the April 20, 2011 meeting. The MOTION was SECONDED by Commission member Mink and carried unanimously. PUBLIC COMMENTS At this time the Commission will hear comments from the public; however, the Commission may not discuss or consider items not appearing on the agenda unless an actual emergency exists. No public comments. 2011-2012 ANNUAL ART PROJECTS PLAN The Annual Art Projects Plan for the Commission and the Library and Arts Department is currently being updated. Staff facilitated a discussion on the accomplishments of the Arts Program over the past year. Commission member Barbour suggested obtaining special funding for this centennial project. She indicated the Commission should step-up to the plate to create something special to express what the city was capable of accomplishing and not let this opportunity pass them by. The Commission agreed to look into it. A MOTION was MADE by Commission member Barbour to APPROVE the FY 2011-12 Annual Art Project Plan with the addition of an Arizona Centennial Project. The MOTION was SECONDED by Commission member Mink and carried unanimously. STAFF REPORTS/CORRESPONDENCE Public Art Pro'ect Updates Sahuaro Ranch Park Entry Monuments Mojgan Vahabzadeh, Library Graphics Coordinator, presented this item. She stated the project group had a meeting last week and everything was progressing very well. Currently, they are coordinating with city departments to see if everything was up to code. She will keep them informed with any new developments. Ms. Laurie Lundquist is the artist for this art project. Adult Center Exhibit Updates Phoenix Artist Guild Judy Fleming, Public Arts Coordinator, presented this item. She stated the Phoenix Art's Guild was currently on display. She encouraged everyone to visit the exhibit. PSA Art Awakenings Judy Fleming, Public Arts Coordinator, presented this item. She stated the Artwerks/Fusion Foundation Mural was approved at the last Arts Commission meeting. She noted everything was moving on schedule. She will keep everyone informed with new developments. Maintenance Updates Cleaning Of Bronzes Judy Fleming, Public Arts Coordinator, presented this item. She stated that the semi-annual maintenance cleaning was being completed, including bronze sculpture cleaning. Other Maintenance Judy Fleming, Public Arts Coordinator, presented this item. She reported a bid was accepted for the repairs at the Elsie McCarthy Sensory Garden. The repairs will start as soon as possible. The water component on this piece will be discontinued as previously discussed. 3 Other Staff Updates Green Festival Judy Fleming, Public Arts Coordinator, presented this item and passed out the winning bookmarks. The City of Glendale Conservation and Sustainable Living program sponsored this bookmark contest to celebrate the theme of "My Green Glendale." The bookmarks depict how Glendale residents can live a green lifestyle. The bookmark contest was open to Glendale students in grades three through eight. Prizes were given to 10 finalists. 2011- 2012 Performing Arts Partnership Program Mojgan Vahabzadeh, Library Graphics Coordinator, presented this item. She stated the 2011- 2012 Performing Arts Partnership Program was going to be presented to Council at their next meeting and hopefully be approved. Once approved, letters of acceptance will be sent out. Summer Art Cara Mojgan Vahabzadeh, Library Graphics Coordinator, presented this item. She stated they were very excited to be involved with this project again. The 2012 Summer Arts Camp program will once again consist of a four week program. COMMISSIONER COMMENTS Ms. Sue Komernicky, Library and Arts Director, announced her retirement. Ms. Komernicky stated it had been a pleasure working with everyone. However, was glad she was leaving them in very capable hands. The Commission members all wished her the best of luck. NEXT MEETING The next meeting of the Glendale Arts Commission will be held Wednesday, August 17, 2011, at 4 p.m. at the 2nd Floor Board Conference Room, Glendale Public Library, 5959 West Brown Street, Glendale, Arizona. ADJOURNMENT A MOTION was MADE by Commission member Dagostino to ADJOURN the meeting. The MOTION was SECONDED by Commission member Lesser and carried unanimously.
