FY 2018-2019 Performing Arts Partnership Program -Project Proposals
The Arts Commission members met to review the FY 2018-19 Performing Arts Program grant
applications. Upon review and discussions, the Arts Commission selected projects for funding
recommendation. The Commission's recommendations will go before the City Council for formal approval
at a future date. A total of eleven project proposals were considered for funding:
ABT Performing Arts Association, dba Arizona Broadway, will perform four Theatres for Young
Audiences plays based on children's books including A Charlie Brown Christmas (December 2018),
The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe (Jan/Feb 2019), Madagascar Musical Adventure (May
2019) and The Princess and the Pea (June 2019). The performances will occur at the Main Library
and opportunity for the audience to engage with production staff after show is part of each program.
Four dinner -and -show tickets to ABT's Mainstage production of The Addams Family will be raffled at
the May show.
2. Ballet Arizona will conduct the Class Act Program with 4th and 5th graders at Don Mensendick
Elementary School. Three Ballet Arizona professional dancers will teach children the basic
elements of dance over three, one-hour after-school sessions and guide them in the creation of
three choreographed dances, which will be presented at the school's annual talent show.
3. Brelby Theatre Company will present 11 performances in November and December 2018 of 12
Days of Christmas at the Brelby Playhouse. All performances will be free to the public and the
programming is for all ages.
4. Center Dance Ensemble (CDE) will present the 2018-19 School Tour. There will be nine
performances at five Glendale Elementary School District schools. CDE will conduct performances
of their touring show starting with The ABC's of Dance, for Grades K to 6, followed by Poetry'n
Motion, for Grades K-3, and From Ballet to Beyonce, for Grades 4-8; and concluding with our
newest piece developed last year, Science is Art.
5. Childsplay will present four performances for after-school and weekend audiences. They will
perform School House Rock Live! and Maddi's Fridge, with two performances at the Foothills Library
and 2 performances at Glendale Elementary Schools.
6. Ironwood Band Community Foundation through its Music Masters Project, will help music
students at Ironwood High School increase their musicianship, grow their love for music, and
experience an opportunity to perform for the wider Glendale community. Professional musicians
from local music groups such as the Phoenix Chamber Brass and Mill Avenue Chamber Players will
perform and teach clinics for over 200 high school students. The goal is for the students to perform
at the 2019 Concert in the Spring as part of the City's Creative Centerline Concert Series.
7. Mill Ave Chamber Players will present Live at the Library, a series of six musical performances to
be held at the Glendale Main Library Auditorium on the fourth Thursday evening of the month, from
September 2018 through April 2019.
8. Phoenix Conservatory of Music will partner with schools in the Glendale Elementary School
District No. 40, which serve Title One populations to facilitate the program, After School Music,
Enrichment and Learning. A professional teaching artist and guest artists will provide 50 hours of
high quality music education experiences to Glendale students, plus additional hours of preparation
and performance guidance for a show for their families at the school sites.
9. The Phoenix Symphony will perform two concerts, as part of their Classroom Concert Series, with
interactive lessons and dialogue for grades K-6 at Arrowhead Elementary (30% low income families)
10. Rising Youth Theatre will work with students from Glenview College Prep to tell their personal
stories though a theatre experience. The resulting play will be performed for other students by the
end of the school year.
10. West Valley Arts Council will collaborate with the Phoenix Theatre and present an art therapy
program in the pediatric wing at Banner Thunderbird Hospital. The program is entitled Partners That
Heal and uses creative drama and will occur 1 day per week for 3 hours over a 48 -week period.
Chairperson Richards asked for a motion for approval of each of the eleven project proposals for the FY
2018-19 Performing Arts Partnership Program.
A motion was made by Commissioner Cole to approve funding in the amount of $4,000 to Arizona
Broadway for the FY 2018-2019 Performing Arts Partnership Program project. Commissioner
Gangemi seconded the motion which carried unanimously.
A motion was made by Vice Chair Ndavu to approve funding in the amount of $3,405 to Ballet
Arizona for the FY 2018-2019 Performing Arts Partnership Program project. Commissioner
Gangemi seconded the motion which carried unanimously.
A motion was made by Commissioner Gangemi to approve funding in the amount of $4,000 to
Brelby Theatre Company for the FY 2018-2019 Performing Arts Partnership Program project.
Commissioner Cole seconded the motion which carried unanimously.
A motion was made by Commissioner Fokszanskyj-Conti to approve funding in the amount of
$4,000 to Center Dance Ensemble for the FY 2018-2019 Performing Arts Partnership Program
project. Vice Chair Ndavu seconded the motion which carried unanimously.
A motion was made by Commissioner Cole to approve funding in the amount of $4,000 to
Childsplay for the FY 2018-2019 Performing Arts Partnership Program project. Vice Chair Ndavu
seconded the motion which carried unanimously.
A motion was made by Vice Chair Ndavu to approve funding in the amount of $4,000 to Ironwood
Band Community Foundation for the FY 2018-2019 Performing Arts Partnership Program project.
Commissioner Cole seconded the motion which carried unanimously.
A motion was made by Commissioner Fokszanskyj-Conti to approve funding in the amount of
$4,000 to Mill Ave Chamber Players for the FY 2018-2019 Performing Arts Partnership Program
project. Vice Chair Ndavu seconded the motion which carried unanimously.
A motion was made by Commissioner Gangemi to approve funding in the amount of $4,000 to
Phoenix Conservatory Of Music for the FY 2018-2019 Performing Arts Partnership Program
project. Vice Chair Ndavu seconded the motion which carried unanimously.
A motion was made by Commissioner Fokszanskyj-Conti to approve funding in the amount of
$4,000 to The Phoenix Symphony for the FY 2018-2019 Performing Arts Partnership Program
project. Commissioner Cole seconded the motion which carried unanimously.
A motion was made by Vice Chair Ndavu to approve funding in the amount of $4,000 to Rising
Youth Theatre for the FY 2018-2019 Performing Arts Partnership Program project. Commissioner
Gangemi seconded the motion which carried unanimously.
A motion was made by Commissioner Gangemi to approve funding in the amount of $4,000 to
West Valley Arts Council for the FY 2018-2019 Performing Arts Partnership Program project.
Commissioner Cole seconded the motion which carried unanimously.
ADJOURNMENT
Chairperson Richards asked for a motion to adjourn.
A MOTION was MADE by Commissioner Cole to ADJOURN the meeting. Commissioner Gangemi
SECONDED the MOTION, which carried unanimously.
The meeting adjourned at 6:10 p.m.
The next regular meeting of the Glendale Arts Commission will be held on June 28, 2018 at 6:00 p.m., in
the Boardroom on the second floor of the Glendale Public Library, 5959 W. Brown St., Glendale, Arizona,
85302.
The Arts Commission meeting minutes of May 7, 2018 were submitted and approved this 28th day of
June, 2018.
