HomeMy WebLinkAboutMinutes - Minutes - Arts Commission - Meeting Date: 1/15/1986MINUTES OF A REGULAR MEETING OF THE GLENDALE ARTS COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF GLENDALE, HELD AT THE MUNICIPAL OFFICE COMPLEX BASEMENT CONFERENCE ROOM 5850 W. GLENDALE AVENUE ON WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 15, 1986 AT 3:00 P.M. The meeting was called to order by Chairwoman Marie Sands at 3:00 p.m. with the following members present: Lowell Rogers,, Bob Page, Enid Abel, Betty Wade, Nelda Crowell, Dr. Joe Atkins. Also present was Debbie Gessner, artist, Lisa Fisher, Vickie Boyes, representatives from the Elaine Horwitch Gallery, and Gloria Santiago, Staff Coordinator for the Glendale Arts Commission. ARp y x —ov a Nii, t -Q s Three corrections in the December 18 minutes were; correct spelling of Dave Kessiler's name, the motion to schedule exhibits on the condition of security was made by Nelda not by Marie, and Bob's request for a plaque on the pond was a stronger statement than the one recorded in the minutes. Balance as of January 15, 1986 is $91,556.90 Future Expenditures are: Two remaining payments for Fine Arts Poster Pond for "Irrigators" high Utility Lines for Pond Balance Future Expenditures estimate Projected income for the next eleven months will be presented at the February meeting. The Commission meeting opened with a discussion about George Lundeen, sculptor. Bob recommended the Commission join in the Murphy Park redevelopment by considering George Lundeen's work for the Park. A motion was made by Lowell to begin negotiations with Lundeen for the 81 high sculpture of "Old Friends." The motion was seconded by Bob and was passed unanimously. Bob stated the Commission should explore Lundeen's other works of that size® Marie will research his other works of art and will report at the next meeting® -45- Marie encouraged the members to visit the O'Brien's Emporium in Scottsdale to view his work. Phil Gardner, Economic Development Director will be invited to the February meeting to inform him of the sculpture. The librarys ground breaking ceremony will take place in March. Debbie Gessner will be invited to participate in the ground breaking. A motion was made by Nelda to have the fine arts poster available for the library ground breaking. The motion was seconded by Betty and the motion did not carry. The members felt the poster should be available sooner. Discussion was held on the poster, the Commission was concerned that the poster had not been printed yet. After much discussion the Commission requested the poster be available at the February meeting. Glenn Compton, Civic Engineer, submitted a progress report on the pond for the library sculpture. Since the architect has not submitted landscape plans yet, he is not able to proceed. Marie discussed the pond with Tint Ernster, Deputy. City Manager of Community Services at their lunch meeting on January 1.3. Marie requested the cost of providing water, electrical, and sewer drain to the site be reexamined by the City to bring the $7,000.00 cost down. Bob stated the actual pond should be tiled and the Commission should pay for doing the pond of high quality. Lowell made the motion to postpone further discussion on the utility lines until a clarification can be given on the costs and when there are definite progress on the pond. The motion was seconded by Dr. Atkins and passed unanimously. The City is still doing research on the security for the City Council Gallery. The City is reviewing a proposal that would provide security for the room. A loan form was distributed for review from the Commission members. Since the Commission has not received a formal. request to schedule exhibits in that room, the Commission will request that responsibility from the City Council. Nelda made a motion to formally request responsibility for scheduling art exhibits in the City Council Lobby, the responsibility will not cover insurance or staffing of the Gallery. The motion was seconded by Lowell. and passed unanimously. The formal request will be brought before the City Council. Debbie Gessner will be contacted when all the details are worked out on the Gallery for an exhibit. Vickie Boyes and Lisa Fisher, both front Elaine Horwitch Gallery gave a slide presentation on two artists. The first artist was Skynear. Skynear lives in Prescott and is interested in architecture of old mining towns. He will take commissions and his prices range from $800.00 to $4,500.00. Skynear is not limited on size at this time, his largest painting is 45" x 55". His work will be exhibited at the Horwitch Gallery the first week in February. -46- The second artist viewed was Dave Kessiler. Dave was raised in Arizona and his work is described as abstract realism. He will also take commission and his prices range front $3,000.00 to $8,500.00. At this time his largest works of art are 66" x 96"./ Discussions are continuing with Ed Mell for the Airport. Mr. Mell would be able to do a painting of the White Tanks if requested. Bob Page and Dr. Atkins will. continue to discuss with Ed Mell. Doug Sexton, Architect for the Municipal Office Complex and Lowell Rogers met to discuss the Civic Clock. Lowell recommended the Commission request direction from the City Council on a specific location for the clock. Several suggestions for the clock are a clock on the elevator tower, between the two buildings, a clock tower on the walk just outside the amphitheater, and on the face of Velma Teague Library since it is projected to be remodeled soon. Lowell and Gloria will meet to draft a letter to City Council. The Commission members enjoyed the slide presentation at the meeting and expressed an interest in inviting other gallery representatives. The Commission would like to see Dick Phillip's work. The Austin Gallery represents him. Gloria invited the Commission members to a social at the Recreation Department on February 20. The next meeting will be February 19 at 3:00 p.m. Gloria Santiago.
