Discussion
A. Report on the sculpture for the Headquarters Public Safety
Building:
The Commission reviewed the City Council's request to
explore the feasibility of changing the title of the
sculpture from "Arizona Ranger" to "Territorial Sheriff".
The territorial sheriff sculpture would recognize one of
Glendale's pioneers, Sam Stout. Mr. Stout served as
Maricopa County Territorial Sheriff from 1901 to 1902.
Chairman Page has discussed the change with artist, Bill
Nebeker. The sculpture would have two plaques, one
identifing the art piece and another recognizing early
peace officers. The peace officers would be further
recognized in an exhibit inside the Public Safety
Building. Mr. Stout would be further recognized in the
interior exhibit area. The City would be responsible for
the exhibition.
This item will appear on the City Council's workshop on
January 9.
B. Report on the Francis Beaugureau reception:
February 25 has been selected as a tentative date to unveil
the Beaugureau painting and for the reception for Mrs.
Marie Sands. This date will be cleared with the Mayor and
City Council's calendars. The Commission was asked to come
up with a name for the art piece for the next meeting.
The Commission decided not to purchase the study for the
painting. The City does retain the copyrights for the
painting and this will be expressed to Mr. Beaugureau.
New Business
The Commission has been asked to do research on mural
artists for the interior of the Public Safety Building.
Everyone was invited to attend the Arizona Arts Congress on
January 18, sponsored by the Arizonians for Cultural
Development.
