HomeMy WebLinkAboutMinutes - Minutes - Arts Commission - Meeting Date: 11/20/1985MINUTES OF A REGULAR MEETING OF THE GLENDALE ARTS COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF GLENDALE, HELD AT THE MUNICIPAL OFFICE COMPLEX BASEMENT CONFERENCE ROOM, 5850 W. GLENDALE AVENUE ON WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 20, 1985 AT 3:00 P.M. The meeting was ca I I ed to or -der by Chairwoman Mar I e Sands at 3:00 p.m. with the following members present, Lowell Rogers, Betty Wade, Enid Abel, Dr. Joseph Atkins. Also present was Lupe Jassop City Illustrator; Phil Gardner, Economic Development Director; and Gloria Santiago, Staff Coordinator for the Glendale Arts Commission. The minutes from the October 16th meeting were approved as read. Richard Szwarocky has requested studio space, either- from a private individual or from the City, in exchange for art work. After discussing the requests a motion was made by Lowell Rogers to refer Richard to the Arizona Commission on the Arts since the request was out of the Glendale Arts Commission's scope. The motion was seconded by Betty. Phil Gardner-, Economic Development Director for, the City of Glendale, gave a presentation on -the downtown development project. Murphy Park Improvements, store front rehabilitations and transportation changes, were all -39- reviewed. The Commission thanked Phil for his very Informative presentation. Tim Ernster, Deputy city Manager of Community Services, was unable to attend the meeting. Marie was invited to attend the City's Strategic Planning Committee. She reported the Committee has divided into smaller groups to do research. Marie will be notified by the Strategic Planning Committee when cu Itura I activities are researched. D r . Atkins and Bob page met with Ed Mell and Suzanne Brown to discuss a possible one man show by Ed Mell In the City Council Art Gallery. Ed Mell, 1960 graduate of North High School, is an artist whose work is very Much In demand. His art work reflects Iris strong design background. A motion was Made by Dr. Atkins to invite Ed Mell to exhibit h,is work In the City Council Gallery at the time which was agreed on by Bob Page and Ed Mell. The motion was seconded by Lowell. Dr. Atkins presented several artist brochures he had acquired at the Scottsdale galleries. The, Commission members were encouraged to visit the galleries to become familiar with new artists. Discussion was held on requesting stagger terms for the Arts Commissions. All the Commission members terms will expire In September 1986. Since the Commission is thinking of long term projects and are just es-i-Elblishing the City Council Gallery, it was felt that staggered terms would give contiguity to the Commission. It was suggested that three year terms would be on a rotation basis for, all members. This issue will be discussed again In the future meetings. The lighting fixtures in the City Council Gallery were, discussed. The Commission would like to see lighting fixtures that would not detract from the art work. They will continue to research fixtures. Marie and Gloria met with Debbie, Lessner, Artist; Rodean Widom, Library Director; Glenn Compton, Civil Engineer; and Kathy Emery, Landscape Architect, to discuss the design of the pond for the "Irrigators.,, The preliminary design The Is an exterior rectangular shell with an oval pond inside. inside of the pond would be lined In blue tile. The design group will continue to meet and will give a report to the Commission at the Decernber meeting. The Fine art Poster was presented with the suggested changes from the October 16 meeting. The exact size Of the poster will be 1611 x 2011 and will be laid out vertically instead of -40- horizontally. "The First Two Years" will be added to the poster, since the Commission has purchased more works of art since the Initial layout of this poster. Suggestions were made by the Commission members to re -arrange some of the layout. Since the request to expend $5800.00 on the printing of the poster will be discussed at the December 3rd City Council meetin P a motion was made by Lowell for Marie to approve the fina? layout of the poster. The motion was seconded by Joe. Suggested sites for the Civic Clock were discussed. Several Ideas were discussed for the design of the clock such as requesting design for the Sister Cities In Mexico and Germany, and also asking clock makers to submit designs. A request for clock designs began so that designs and suggested sites can be presented to the City Council In the near future. The Commission was not able to review the Library model due to the lack of time.
