GLENDALE ARTS COMMISSION
OF THE CITY OF GLENDALE
HELD AT THE GLENDALE MUNICIPAL OFFICE COMPLEX

WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 18, 1987, AT 3:00 P.M.
Call to Order
The meeting was called to order by Chairwoman Mrs. Marie
Sands at 3:00 p.m. with the following members present: E.
Lowell Rogers, Betty Wade, Bob Page, Dr. Joe Atkins, and
Nelda Crowell . Also present at the meeting was Gloria
Santiago, Staff Liaison to the Glendale Arts Commission.
Treasurers Report
The Municipal Art Fund Balance is $10,554.42.
Discussion
The first item on the agenda was the Town Clock dedication at
Murphy Park. Mayor Renner unveiled the Town Clock and
introduced the Ad Hoc Clock Committee. The Arts Commission
was thanked for purchasing the clock. The cost of the Clock
was $22,693.
Discussion was held concerning art for the O'Neil Park
Building. The building is scheduled to be completed in early
December. The Commission will study traffic patterns before
acquiring artwork. This item was tabled for the January
meeting.
"Ascending Light" by Aaron Elliott and "Carrying Water" by
Maureen Frische, are now on display at the Glendale Airport.
"Palms-Sahuaro Ranch" by Tim Tyler is exhibited on the first
floor level of the municipal office Complex.
The Commission discussed the idea of postcards of the City's
art collection. The postcards could be sold at the new
library's gift shop. A motion was made by Mr. Rogers and
seconded by Mr. Page that the parties in charge of producing
postcards be encouraged to feature the artwork purchased by
the Arts Commission as a method of increasing art awareness.
The motion passed unanimously. Proceeds from the postcard
sales would go back to the City.
Discussion was held on the North Public Safety Building on
63rd Avenue and Union Hills. The Commission agreed that the
access road should be installed before artwork could be
selected.
The Valley National Bank has been invited to exhibit artwork
in the Municipal Art Gallery. The exhibit will feature
Artist Paul Dycke. The Arizona State University Art Museum
will loan two to three paintings, and Mrs. Sands will loan
three paintings. It was suggested that employees of the
local branches of Valley National Bank be invited. The
opening will be held on January 13. The exhibit will run
until March 5.
Glendale Community College Art Facility will be invited to
exhibit between March and April. The Phoenix Art Museum and
Phillip Curtis will also be asked to exhibit in the future.
A motion was made by Mr. Rogers and seconded by Mr. Page to
purchase three easels for displaying art. The motion passed
unanimously.
New Business
The Commission discussed the future and direction of the
Commission.
Ron Caya, Director of Art Education, addressed the Arts
Commission. Mr. Caya offered his assistance to the
Commission and discussed possible joint programs in the
future.
Next Meeting Date
The Next meeting will be on Wednesday, January 13, 1988, at
3:00 p.m. , at the City Council Chambers Building.
