ON WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 14, 1984 AT 3:00 P.M. CALL TO ORDER The meeting was called to order by Chairwoman Marie Sands at 3:00 p.m. with the following members present: Betty Wade, Enid Abel, Lowell Rogers, Robert Page, Nelda Crowell and Dr. Joseph Atkins. Also present was Beverley Miller, Staff Coordinator for the Glendale Arts Commission. Each Commissioner had been mailed a copy of the minutes of the previous meeting in advance. There being no corrections or additions to the minutes of the meeting of October 3, 1984, the minutes stood approved as sent. DISCUSSION Discussion began with Beverley; the Finance and Budget and Research Depart- ments of the City, are in the process of updating and interpreting the budget and the ordinance of the Glendale Arts Commission. Beverley would like to invite Terry Sharp, the Director of Budget and Research to the next meeting to make a presentation to the commission regarding the commissions financial status. The consensus of the commission was that if changes were being discussed, they should be notified. Marie requested that all of the commissioners study the arts ordinance in preparation for the next meeting. The commission would normally meet on the 3rd Wednesday of December, but due to the busy Christmas schedule, the December meeting was changed to the 2nd Wednesday of the month. The next meeting of the Glendale Arts Commission will be December 12, 1984 at 3:00 p.m. at the library conference room. Terry Sharp will be invited to the meeting to make a presentation on the budget for the Arts Commission. The next order of business, Marie read a thank you note from Judy Atkins to the commission, thanking them for their purchases from the Glendale Festival of the Arts. Next, Marie brought a recent article on the schedule of events for the City's 75th Anniversary Celebration. The commission should begin thinking of what sort of unveiling celebration we should have for the painting by Robert McCall. Marie appointed Betty Wade to work with Beverley, Bob McCall, the commission and the City to coordinate an unveiling ceremony in conjuction with the 75th Anniversary events. The commission felt this ceremony however, was newsworthy enough to be a seperate event. Marie asked the commissioners to give their comments concerning this event to Betty. Next, Beverley read a letter from the Arizona Commission on the Arts to Mayor Rennner, inviting the City to participate in a series of professional perfor- mances and exhibitions. Beverley felt participation in this program could be better served by the City's Cultural and Special Events Coordinator. Motion by Robert Page, seconded by Lowell Rogers to have Beverley refer this to the City's staff person recently hired to coordinate all special and cultural events. -19 Debbie Gessner presented to the commission, three (3) figurines of an irrigator. Debbie said these could be either individual figures or they could be grouped together. Discussion took place regarding the size, material, construction, cost and possible location for this work. The commission talked of different design approaches, and told Debbie to make some changes, and they would invite her back to the January meeting to make another presentation. Richard Szwarocky presented his full scale size working sketch. The commission agreed on the composition, but had several comments regarding the three (3) front figures. After some discussion, it was agreed upon that the woman's skirt and the girl's hair should be longer and the girl should not be full figured and should look younger. Richard was instructed to let Beverley know when clay model is ready; the commissioners will then go to Richard's to preview the model. There being no further business, Motion by Dr. Atkins, seconded by Betty Wade to adjourn the meeting at 4:45 p.m. Beverley Mil er/Staff Coordinator for the Glendale Arts Commission _20_
