Discussion
Richard Szwarocky, the "Glendale Pioneers 1910,11 artist viewed
the art piece and also submitted a bid to repair. Mr.
Szwarocky's estimate is approximately $3,500, but could be
higher since he asked that his living expenses in Laguna
Beach, California be covered.
Each member received bids, submitted by five businesses,
concerning the "Glendale Pioneers, 191011 repair. The members
will review the bids and will discuss at their November
meeting.
Mr. Szwarocky brought his sketch from Glendale Pioneers and
asked of the Commission would be interested in purchasing it.
Discussion was held on exhibiting the sketch for a one-year
period, in the Municipal Office Complex with a notice that it
was for sale by the artist. The cost of the sketch is $5,000.
The Commission discussed that the City, or the Commission,
could not be an agent for an artist and declined the offer.
Mr. Szwarocky will be notified.
Post Card Progress Report
Mrs. Crowell reported on information gathered concerning post
cards. SEE THE ATTACHED REPORT. Several other items
associated with cards, such as storage, distribution,
accounting and inventory of the cards, were also discussed. A
motion was made by Mrs. Crowell to postpone the printing post
cards until further market research could be done. Mr. Page
seconded the motion, and it passed unanimously. Mrs. Sands
will contact Robert McCall to notify him about our decision.
Barbara Woolston
Barbara Woolston, 5301 W. Pugit, Glendale, AZ 85302,
937-8708, gave a report on her art work. Mrs. Woolston is
originally from Wisconsin, but has lived in Glendale for 10
years. She is a self-taught artist. Her painting style is
considered "naive art." The prices of her art work, unframed,
are: for 1611 x 2011 for $75, and 2411 x 3011 for $250.
Foothills Public Safety Building
Doug Sexton, from V.S.L.A. reviewed the proposed site for a
sundial at the Foothills Public Safety Building. The location
is approximately 751 x 801. The sundial, or the outdoor
sculpture, could be any medium. There are some concerns that
the site has a northern exposure, while a southern exposure
may be better for a sundial. The budget for the project is
$15,000. Mr. Sexton will do research on sundials and outdoor
sculpture, plus on the installation and will attend a future
Arts Commission meeting.
New Business
"Arizona Promise," by Robert McCall, has been moved into the
Council Chambers for better exposure to the public.
The four paintings, purchased at the Festival of the Arts,
will be hung in the following locations:
"Primary Interplay," by Shirley Klein Kleppe, will be
displayed at the Foothills Public Safety Building.
"The Rustlers," by Mel Millsap will be displayed at the
Glendale Public Library, Children's Area.
"The Parada de los Ninos," will be displayed at Velma Teague
Library.
"Through the Arches," by Jack Glaser will be displayed at the
Glendale Public Library.
A poster and post cards, donated by the Hall of Fame, will
also be exhibited at the Foothills Public Safety Building.
Mrs. Sands and Mr. Page reported on the Cowboy Artist Exhibit,
at the Phoenix, Art Museum. Everyone was encouraged to attend
the exhibition and to particularly pay attention to the
sculptures.
Sam Terry is the artist that does the Arizona Bank Kachina
stained glass.
