Business Discussion
A. Architects Report for the Headquarters Public Safety
Building:
Dorothy Bron, the project interior designer and Chris
Henry, reported on the palette of the interior
furnishings. The Public Safety Building foyer will have
two large 81 x 191 spaces, which would be ideal for a
mural or large art project. The panels are 9 1/2 feet
above ground level. If the commission considers doing a
project on that location, it is recommended that the a
canvas be mounted to the wall instead of painting
directly to the wall.
B. Headquarters Public Safety Sculpture Report!
The commission reviewed the two Arizona Ranger models
submitted by Bill Nebeker and Pat Haptonstall. A motion
was made by Mr. Rogers and seconded by Mrs. Abel to
commission Bill Nebeker for an "Arizona Ranger"
sculpture. A second motion was made by Mr. Rogers and
seconded by Mrs. Colvin to commission a one and
one-half, life-size sculpture, which would be
approximately nine feet in height. The commission will
also request one of the small models to be included in
the $58,000 commission payment. Both motions passed.
It is recommended that the sculpture be placed on a
three to four foot pedestal. The backdrop of the
sculpture will be the Courts Administration, which will
be approximately twenty-five feet in elevation. The
sculpture will be completed by March of 1991, to
coincide with the opening of the building.
C. Art Conservation and Security Report:
Mrs. Colvin reported that Aaron Elliott repaired the
airport painting "Ascending Light". The painting will
be relocated to a more secure location, perhaps in the
airport conference room. Mr. Elliott will receive a
thank you letter for his generous contribution.
New Business
A. Letter to Westcor
A letter will be drafted and sent to the Planning
Department, which will encourage private developers to
include art in future developments. The Commission will
review the letter by the commissioner, prior to the
letter being sent to the Planning Department.
B. Lighting for art located in the Council Chambers:
The commission recommended that the lighting for the
Robert McCall, "Arizona Promise" be changed to focus
lighting directly on the painting. Gloria will work
with the Building Services Department to improve the
lighting.
The next meeting will be Wednesday, November 15, at 3:00
p.m. in the City Council Chambers.
