HomeMy WebLinkAboutMinutes - Minutes - Arts Commission - Meeting Date: 10/16/1985MINUTES OF A REGULAR MEETING OF THE GLENDALE ARTS COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF GLENDALE.- HELD AT THE MUNICIPAL OFFICE COMPLEX BASEMENT CONFERENCE ROOM, 5850 WEST GLENDALE AVENUE ON WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 16, 1985 AT 3:00 P.M. The meeting was called to order by Chairwoman Marie Sands at 3:00 p.m. with the following members present: Enid Abel, Dr. Joseph Atkins, Betty Wade, and Robert Page. Also present were Lupe Jasso, City Illustrator and Gloria Santiago, Staff Coordinator- for the Glendale Arts Commission. Minutes of the September 12 meeting were approved as mailed. Projected receipts to the Municipal Arts Fund for 1985-86 is $132,,000. Projected expenditures for the -two remaining payments to Debbie Gessner Is $21,000. The Glendale Arts Council purchases amounted to $1#950 Instead of the $3,000 appropriated. Ngy__B.u.a_1 The Chair was temporarily assigned to Robert Page for the first order of new business. Enid Abel made the following motion: In accordance with the Commisslonts "Acquisition Procedures", I move that this Commission, on behalf of the City of Glendale, accept a fine art gift to the City by Mr. & Mrs. John Porter Sands, Sr., "Conversation" by Bette Wusich (Artist). 1811 x 2411, oil. This acceptance, by approval of this motion, will by-pass the provision for review by the Professional Review Committee, based on the acknowledged stature of the artist and the review by this Commission of the work of art. It is the recommendation of the Commission that "Conversation" be Incorporated into the City of Glendalefs permanent fine arts collection. The motion was seconded by Dr. Atkins. Motion passed unanimously. -36- Mrs. Sands gave background Information on the artist. Bette Statler Wusich Is a native of Arizona, she Is a member of the Arizona Watercolor- Associations the Southern Arizona Watercolor Guild and the Arizona Artist Guild. The Commission thanked Mr. & Mrs. Sands for their fine art contribution, the first donation of art to the City of Glendale. The Chair was given back to Mrs. Sands. Lupe Jasso, the City Illustrators asked the Commission if they were interested In promoting and sponsoring a fine arts poster. The poster consists of the McCall, Szwarockyp Frisches and McEachron art pieces, the size of the poster is 1211 x 19-1/211. The approximate price for 1,000 posters Is $1,250, for 2,000 posters the cost would be $1,440. The purpose of the poster Is to promote the fine art purchases of the Arts Commission. A motion was made by Robert Page to accept the poster project and to print 2,000 posters. The motion was seconded by Enid Abel. Discussion was held on the selling price of the poster and the logistics of distributing the posters. A motion was made by Robert Page that the City use a percentage of the posters required In the normal city business at no charge. The remaining posters would be sold at $1.00 each with funds going back to the Municipal Art Fund. The motion was seconded by Dr. Atkins. The motion passed. Marie reported on the Festival of the Arts purchases. The two pieces purchased were, "Carousel Departure" 41 x 6► oil by Richard Hlllls for $1,500 and "Dry Sink", 1£a►► x 2411 acrylic by Al Peacock for $450.00. Background information was given on both artists. A report was given on the civic clock project. Marie has asked the Mayor to specify a location for the clock. Research has been gathered on civic clocks but until a location Is specified, research can't continue. Mayor Renner has requested the Commission oversee the art gallery exhibits in the new City Council Chambers. The Arts Council exhibit• will be displayed through January. A -37- motion was made by Robert Page to schedule -the artists for a six week period starting in February. The motion was seconded by Dr. Atkins. The tentative schedule of shows Iso February to mid-March - Debbie Gessner Mid -Mar -ch to May - Gloria Gemmill May to mid-June - Ed Mle I I Potential shows would be paintings of the month or a display of the Commissionerfs collections. It was requested that Robert Page and Dr. Atkins meet with Ed Mells Marie will meet with Debbie Gessner.
