CITY OF GLENDALE, FIELD AT THE MUNICIPAL
OFFICE COMPLEX BASEMENT CONFERENCE ROOM,

THURSDAY.- SEPTEMBER 12,, 1985 AT 3:00 P.M.

The meeting was called to order by Chairwoman Marie Sands at 3:00
p.m. with the following members present- Lowell Rogers, Enid Abel,
Nelda Crowell, Betty Wade. Also present was Gloria Santiago, Staff
Coordinator for the Glendale Arts Commission and Bart Turner member
of the Parks and Recreation Advisory Board.

The minutes from the previous meeting were approved as sent.
The budget report was reviewed. The purchase of the light fixture
for the Szwarocky wood sculpture was an item which was not approved
by the Arts Commission. The Commission commissioned the Szwarocky
piece with the understanding that there was enough natural light in
the main room. The Commission felt the lights should be removed In
-time. A motion was made by Lowell Rogers that In the future the
Commission approve all fighting requests by the artists. The
motion passed unanimously.
The City asked the Commission If they would be Interested in doing
an exhibit for the opening of the new City Council Chambers. The
City Council Chambers are expected to be completed In late
October. A motion was made by Enid that the Commission recommend
the City contact the Glendale Arts Council and ask them to exhibit
art works the Council has purchased over, the last 20 years. The
motion passed unanimously.
The Issue of coordinating art works for the City Council Chamber
was postponed until the City Manager could discuss further.
Debbie Gessner received her first payment on August 23. This was
the first of three payments for the "Irrigators."
The Mayor requested the Arts Commission to gather Information on
the Murphy Park Clock project. A motion was made by Lowell Rogers
that the Commission Investigate the possibility of a civic clock.
Enid seconded the motion which passed. It was suggested that a
subcommittee may be needed to assist.

Gloria reported on a video project that Rob Farr., the City Cable
Video Specialist is working on. Rob's goal is to got the program
on KAET - Channel 8. The program covers the creation of the
"Glendale.. Pioneers 191011 plus interviews with people who know
Richard.
The maintenance and repair of commissioned art work was also
discussed. More information will be gathered and it will be
discussed again.
Two possible artists the Commission may want to consider in the
future are Ed Mell and Gloria Gemmill. "Arizona Highway" featured
Ed Mell in the July issue and Gloria Gemmill's work was featured In
the August "Southwest Art" issue. Both are artists whose work is
increasing in value rapidly. It was suggested both artists be
Invited to I -lie October or November meetings to present their
portfolios.
There was also discussion on placing the Robert McCall at the
Airport which is schedule to be completed In June 1986. The
Commission members felt the McCall should be at the Airport because
it was painted and commissioned with that location in mind. It was
also brought up that the Commission also has a responsibility to
the artist of where their work Is hung.
The selection date for the Arts Council Festival of the Arts is
October 6 at 3:30 p.m. The art work will be displayed at Margaret
Taylor's home on 8028 N. 50th Avenue. The opening reception will
be October 19.
The next Commission meeting will be Wednesday, October 16 at 3:00
p.m.
