GLENDALE ARTS COMMISSION OF THE CITY
OF GLENDALE,HELD IN THE CITY COUNCIL BLDG.,ROOM 8-5
5850 WEST GLENDALE AVENUE, ON
WEDNESDAY, JUNE 18, 1986 AT 3:00 P.M.
The meeting was called to order by chairwoman Mrs -
Marie Sands at 3:00 with the following members
present: Nelda Crowell, Bob Page and Gloria
Santiago, staff liason to the Glendale Arts
Commission.

Mrs. Sands presented some information on artist
Howard Post. Mr. Post, a former professional rodeo
rider, paints modern ranching life. Powerful
color, higher perspective and angles within
abstractions are characteristic of his work.
The Arts Commission may consider asking Mr. Post t#
do a rodeo scene with children for the new
library. Further discussion on Howard Post will be
brought up in the fall.
Other artists to keep in the Commission's artist
file are; Cynthia Rigden, sculpture, Carl Chapp,
cotton farmer and printer/illustrator, and Alex
Aluarado, mural artist.
The ordinance has been revised to include the
responsibility of the City Council art gallery.
Commission members will be receiving notices from
the Mayor this summer concerning appointment
terms.
Fall Dates
The Festival of the Arts will be held on October 18
and 19 at Murphy Park. The park will also be
dedicated that weekend. The Commission would be

like "Old Friends" to be part of the dedication
ceremony.
The airport terminal will be completed in October.

probably be sometime in November.
Mr. Page recommended that the Commission develop a
3 to 5 year Plan for the Arts Commission. The plan
should • • • a marketing plan
and capital improvement information. The
commissions plan should also tie into the City's
long range plan. It was also recommended that the
Commission request the percent for art • increased
from 5% to a full percent. Bob Page and Gloria
will develop a draft this summer which will be
presented in the September meeting.
Gloria reported that the budget request to hire
someone for the • has • approved. A
part-time recreation leader will • hired after
July I to work in the gallery. The leader will be
supervised by • their responsibilities will
include • shows, assist with hanging
shows, and security of the gallery. Debbie Gessner
and Ed Mell will be contacted to schedule shows for
this fall.
The request for sunscreens for the gallery has also
been approved and will be purchased after July 1.
Since Tom Shadoin, interior designee for the new
library has offered to give the Arts Commission a
tour of the library, the September meeting will be
held at Sahuaro Ranch in one of the homes. The
meeting will be Wednesday, September 17, at 3:00
P.M.
