HomeMy WebLinkAboutMinutes - Minutes - Arts Commission - Meeting Date: 6/12/1985MINUTES OF A REGULAR MEETING OF THE GLENDALE ARTS COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF GLENDALE, HELD AT THE MUNICIPAL OFFICE COMPLEX BASEMENT CONFERENCE ROOM, 5850 WEST GLENDALE AVENUE ON WEDNESDAY, JUNE 12, 1985 AT 3:00 P.M. Call To Order The meeting was called to order by Chairwoman Marie Sands at 3:00 p.m. with the following members pres- ent: Lowell Rodgers, Enid Abel, Dr. Joseph Atkins, Nelda Crowell. Also present were: Gloria Santiago, Staff Coordinator for the Glendale Arts Commission, Rodeane Widom, Library and Cable Director, J. Barry Moffitt, Library Architect, and Steve Flores with J. Barry Moffitt 9 Associates, LTD. Discussion Marty Vanacour, City Manager had been invited to attend the Commission meeting but was unable to at- tend. Agenda items A)Maintenance and repair of com- missions art work and B)Coordination of art and exhibits for the City of Glendale, were postponed un- til the September meeting in order to receive Mr. Van- acour's input on these items. C) Discussion of Debbie Gessner's Contracts The Municipal Art Plan III and contract were re- viewed by the Commission members. The City Attorney has approved the contract which is a standard commission contract. Motion by Member Rodgers, seconded by Member Atkins, to approve the contract and to seek City Council approval. Motion passed unanimously. D) Library Design Team Presentation Rodeane Widom and Barry Moffitt presented the model of the new library. Both the design and site were approved by the City Council in late May, bids will begin in January 1986. The library will be a 6200 square foot multi -story building designed for future horizontal expanshion. The Commission expressed an interest in the wall space for future art work. E) Discussion of Pond for Bronze Sculpture Several sites were discussed for the Gessner sculpture. The sites are a)facing east outside the lecture hall next to the main entrance; b)dir- ectly outside of the children's area; c)the north -32- west grass area next to the walkway from the parking lot. The east walls of the library will be glass so the sculpture can be seen from in- side the building at any of the three locations. Consideration was given to placing the sculpture in an area that is designed for future expan- sion therefore the third site was recommended by the Commission. This area would also allow more room for a free -form reflective pond. The architect and artist will give a final recommend- ation on the site. F) Heard Museum Loan The loan of the Navajo Rug will expire June 30, 1985 and will not be extended. Gloria will write a letter of appreciation to the Heard Museum. G) Review of Biographic Information and Layout The Commission reviewed the layout and informa- tion. Changes were made in the introductory para- graph concerning the Commission. H) Final Details for the June 18 Unveiling were dis- cussed. The program is: Marie Mayor Renner Hugh Harelson Richard Szwarocky I) The Commission's next meeting will be September 12 at 3:00 p.m. Marie will represent the Commission during the summer break.
