HomeMy WebLinkAboutMinutes - Minutes - Arts Commission - Meeting Date: 6/3/1987MINUTES OF A REGULAR MEETING OF THE GLENDALE ARTS COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF GLENDALE HELD AT THE CITY COUNCIL BUILDING, ROOM B-5 5850 W. GLENDALE AVENUE ON WEDNESDAY, JUNE 3, 1937, AT 3:00 P.M. The meeting was called to order by Chairwoman Mrs. Marie Sands at 3:00 p.m. with the following members present: Dr. Joe Atkins, E. Lowell Rogers, Nelda Crowell, Bob Page; and Gloria Santiago, Staff Liaison to the Glendale Arts Commission. Treasurers Report June 3, 1987 $152,175.24 CoMMitted ExDen Aitur-e-gs $ 49,254.67 AVAILABLE BALANCE TOTAL $102,920.57 I This special meeting was held to discuss the Allan Houser sculpture entitle "Meeting on the Trail." This sculpture ic the first casting, which will be a limited edition of four. Future editions of this sculpture will be sold for over 01 t10. The list price for this first casting is $85,000. The City has the opportunity to purchase this sculpture for $70rOOO. A motion was made by Dr. Atkins and seconded by Bob Page that the Arts Commission purchase the first edition of the Allan Houser sculpture "Meeting on the Trail" for $70,000. The cost of the sculpture is to include the burnish work by the agent and request the future editions will not be sold in this geographical area. The motion was passed unanimously. Mrs. Sands commented that, in the years the Commission has been together, the Commission has voted unanimously on many issues. Bob Page listed three possible sites the sculpture could be [placed. The sites were: the Foothills Public Safety Building on Union Hills, the Public Safety Headquarters which will be located in the downtown area, and the Community Building that was approved in the recent bond election® A motion was made by Lowell Rogers and seconded by Nelda Crowell that until a site is determined, the bronze sculpture be placed in the gallery® The motion passed unanimously. A pedestal for the sculpture will be discussed when a permanent location is determined. Old Business Staff was asked to research City guidelines concerning placement of a plaque with the original. members of the Arts Commission. New Busines Discussion was held on how private developers could be encouraged to incorporate art in new construction. Several suggestions were creating visual. art awards and offering incentives to businesses. The Lincor Corporation recently involved the chairman of the Arts Commissiont Mrs. Sands, in their sculpture competition. This type of cooperation shouli be recognized. A letter from the Arts Commission encouraging the developers to incorporate art could be distributed from the Building Permit office. The letter could offer the Arts Commission assistance as art consultants. The Valley National Bank will be invited to exhibit some of their art collection in the Winter of 1987.
