GLENDALE ARTS COMMISSION
HELD AT THE GLENDALE MUNICIPALCOMPLEX

Call to order
The meeting was called to order by Chairman Mrs. Marie Sands,
at 3:00 p.m. with the following members present: Nelda
Crowell, Bob Page, Dr. Joe Atkins, and Mavis Voris. Also
present were Police Captain Jerry McCown and Gloria Santiago,
Staff Liaison to the Glendale Arts Commission.
Approval of Minutes
The April 19, 1989 Minutes were approved. It was recommended
that the Public Comments section be changed to a positive
statement instead of a negative. The new sentence will read:
Citizen views will be accepted by the Commission, however the
Commission may only consider items on the agenda.
Financial Report
The balance of the Municipal Art Fund as of April 19:
$49,317.87
First payment to Francis Beaugureau: $ 6,000.00
Balance as of May 17: $43,317.87
1989-90 Budget:
Funds carried over from 1988-89 budget: $43,317.87
Funds transferred to the 1989-90 budget: $40.000.00
Total: $83,317.87
Encumbered funds for the Beaugureau painting: $14,000.00
Available balance for art expenditures: $69,317.87
Business Discussion
A. Headquarters Public Safety Progress Report:
Capt. McCown presented the most recent exterior drawings
of the Headquarters Public Safety Building. The existing
buildings on the block will be renovated to compliment
the new facility. The Commission requested that a sketch
of the nine foot sculpture be included in future drawings
of the facility.

of the sculpture. Gloria Santiago will present the
request to the City Landscape Architect who is
responsible for the landscaping.
B. Stain Glass Reports
Mrs. Crowell reported that if stain glass would be
considered for future projects, it was very important
that the artist and the architects work together from the
beginning of the project.
C. Arizona Ranger Sculptures

D. Foothills Public Safety:
Doug Sexton has been paid $600 for the sundial models for
the Foothill Public Safety Building. The project is
tabled indefinitely.
E. Art Maintenance Report:
"Glendale Pioneer, 191011, the wood bas sculpture will be
picked up May 18, for repair. The Wood Man has been
contracted to repair the sculpture. The Wood Man, Ron
Roe, will submit a estimate of the repair after he has
reviewed the piece. The Commission stated that if the
repair submitted was over $3,000 that a justification
reported be submitted.
New Business
A. Art in Private Development Report:
Bob Page reviewed the Phoenix Arts Commission guidelines
for Art in Private Development. All members will review
copies of the guidelines to review and make comments.
Mr. Page requested that further information be gathered,
such as the threshold of size and space for this
requirement and what other cities are requiring art in
private development.
Phil Gardner, Economic Development Director for the City
of Glendale will be invited to the June 21, meeting to
give an update of development to the Commission.
Next Meeting Date
The Commission meeting will be held on Wednesday, June 217,
1989 at 3:00 p.m. in B-3 in the Municipal Office Complexi
