HomeMy WebLinkAboutMinutes - Minutes - Arts Commission - Meeting Date: 5/16/1984MINUTES OF A REGULAR MEETING OF THE GLENDALE ARTS COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF GLENDALE, HELD AT THE LIBRARY CONFERENCE ROOM, 7010 N. 58th DR. WEDNESDAY, MAY 16, 1984 AT 3:00 P.M. CALL TO ORDER The meeting was called to order by Chairwoman Marie Sands at 3:00 p.m. with the following members present: Enid Abel, Dr. Joseph Atkins, Nelda Crowell, Betty Wade and Lowell Rogers. Robert Page was absent. Also present was Beverley Miller, Staff Coordinator for the Glendale Arts Commission. DISCUSSION Discussion began with Marie mentioning that she had spoken with the Heard Museum about temporily loaning the City of Glendale, Arts Commission a Navajo Rug for the main lobby of City Hall until the commissioned artwork is completed. The Heard will be sending to Marie the details covering the specifications for hanging the rug, and the terms of the loan. The commissioners were pleased with the progress and felt the rug would work out well. Discussion then turned to Artist -Sculpture, Richard Szwarocky. Richard was present at the previous meeting of the Glendale Arts Commission and was asked to submit a price list for the commission's consideration. Richard wrote a letter to the commission describing the pricing details. Marie then asked the commissioners their feelings concerning the affordability of the work of art. After several minutes of discussion, the concensus of the group seemed to be that the only way they could afford Richard's work was if they chose terracotta or laminated wood. They were all in favor of his work, but not at mahogany prices. It was decided that Dr. Atkins would talk to Richard concerning his prices for mahogany, obtain prices for terracotta and laminated wood and would report back at our next meeting. Next, Marie entertained a discussion concerning the artist, Debbie Gessner. Debbie had previously submitted to the commission a portfolio of her work. It was decided that Debbie would be given the opportunity to create several clay models during the summer for consideration by the commission in the fall. Discussion then turned to the next meeting date. It became obvious that it would be difficult to obtain a quorum during the summer. Motion by Enid Abel, seconded by Betty Wade to cancel the July and August meetings. Motion passed unanimously. Motion by Dr. Joseph Atkins, seconded by Lowell Rogers to hold the June meeting on the 7th at 3:00 p.m. Motion passed unanimously. There being no further business, Motion by Betty Wade, seconded by Marie Sands to adjourn the business portion of the meeting at 3:45 p.m. Motion passed unanimously. The commission then proceeded to City Hall for a tour conducted by the architect of the new Municipal Office Complex. /Bevdrley Mier/Staff Coordinator for the Glendale Arts Commission -16- MINUTES OF A REGULAR MEETING OF THE GLENDALE ARTS COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF GLENDALE, HELD AT THE LIBRARY CONFERENCE ROOM, 7010 N. 58th DR. Miller, Staff Coordinator for the Glendale Discussion opened with the commissioners making comments on the sketch as presented on the cover of the Municipal Arts Plan II. The consensus of the group seemed to be that the sketch needed a little work. The contract, as written, contains a clause; 12. Scope of the project, which outlines the phases for the work. Changes could then be made during the progression of the various working stages and prior to acceptance by the commission. Marie was charged with talking to Richard and informing him of the comments that were raised during the discussion.
